June 16, 2009
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - With the summer already here, 17 Santa Clara baseball stars will highlight summer leagues ranging from New York coast all the way to the Great White North, and Broncos fans can follow the adventures of SCU ballplayers right here on SantaClaraBroncos.com. This summer, Santa Clara boasts five student-athletes who will compete in the Northwoods Baseball League, based in and around the great Wisconsin-Minnesota area. RHP Alex Rivers returns to the Madison Mallards this summer and will be joined by J.R. Graham. Rivers went 4-1 with the Mallards last summer, with one save. He made eight starts with a 3.68 ERA in 51.1 innings and struck out 38. Infielders Curtis Wagner and Ryan Rieger will be featured on the rosters of the Thunder Bay Border Cats and Waterloo Bucks, respectively; and outfielder Lucas Herbst will play for the Eau Claire Express. Making their way east this summer are five Broncos and one assistant coach. Volunteer assistant coach and former Bronco ballplayer Shawn Epidendio takes on his first head coaching stint with the North Fork Ospreys of the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League on Long Island. Pitchers Jason Westerberg and Jon Hughes will also highlight rosters in the league as they will take the mound for the West Hampton Aviators and Riverhead Tomcats, respectively. Also traveling to the Empire State is fellow pitcher Paul Twining, who will play for the Saratoga Phillies of the New York Collegiate baseball League.
A few hours south, pitchers Mike Couch and Joe Supple are set to take the mound for the Rockville Express of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League in Maryland. Although teams have not been announced, West Coast Conference All-Freshman selection Andrew Biancardi and pitcher Reece Kiriu will play in the Hawaii Collegiate League; while Cory Hall and Ian O'Connor will remain in California this summer. Both will play for the San Luis Obispo Blues. RHP Steve Kalush also remains on the West Coast playing for the Corvallis Knights in Oregon. First team All-WCC honoree Geoff Klein rounds out the Broncos competing this summer. He will be featured on the Anchorage Glacier Pilots rosters of the Alaskan League. 2009 Santa Clara Broncos Summer League Assignments POSITION PLAYERS: COACHES: |
