SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara head baseball coach Mark O'Brien announced the signing of All-American Rhett Nelson to a National Letter of Intent on Monday. Nelson joins an already impressive Bronco recruiting class for 2009-10.
"We are extremely excited to add Rhett to an already strong recruiting class," said O'Brien. "We like Rhett's competitiveness and the fact that he is a winner. He has a good presence about him and we really like the fact he can pitch and swing the bat."
Nelson joins the Broncos from Timpanogos High School in Orem, Utah. A right-handed pitcher, he led the Timberwolves to a 2008 state championship and was the winning pitcher of the state championship game. He compiled a 10-0 record in 2008, and a 3-0 mark during the team's title run. Overall, he tossed 10 complete games with a 2.02 ERA and 78 strikeouts. At bat, Nelson had a .441 region average and a .421 average in the state tournament.
The 6-foot-2 Lindon, Utah native garnered seven accolades as a junior including the 5A State Tournament MVP and was named a Max Preps Junior All-American. Nelson also received Salt Lake Tribune, Desert News and Utah Valley's Player of the Year accolades, while earning first-team all-state, all-region and NHSBCA (National High School Baseball Coaches Association) all-district honors. He was also an all-region selection as a sophomore in 2007.
Heading into the 2009 season, Nelson was ranked the No. 1 pitcher by the Provo Daily Herald and was a pre-season Under Armour All-American nominee.
Through nine pre-season games as a senior, Nelson has a 4-0 record with a 0.63 ERA and 33 strikeouts. He is also batting .577 with three triples, two home runs and 10 RBIs.
