SCU Baseball Travels To UC Davis; Hosts Cornell This Weekend

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara baseball will battle UC Davis in a midweek game before hosting Cornell in a three-game weekend series. The Broncos and Aggies face off on Wednesday, March 11 at 2:30 p.m. at Dobbins Stadium in Davis.

SCU then returns to Stephen Schott Stadium for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 14 against the Big Red of Cornell. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. The series concludes with a single game on Sunday, March 15 at 1 p.m.

Last Time Out
The Broncos went 1-3 against the Ducks of Oregon last weekend. Santa Clara earned a 4-1 win on Friday with Nate Garcia tossing a complete game. Brady Fuerst led the team with five hits and three runs, while Matt Long had three RBIs and David Abraham batted .375.

Garcia Earns Second WCC Weekly Honor
Junior right-hander Garcia was named the West Coast Conference's Pitcher of the Week on March 9. It is the Santa Clara native's fourth career weekly accolade from the WCC and the second of the season. In his third start of the year, the 6-foot-1 Bellarmine College Prep product was credited with a complete game and earned the win after allowing just one run on six hits against Oregon on Friday, March 6. Garcia also struck out a season-high 12 batters. For the season, Garcia is 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA. He has tossed 22.0 innings and has struck out 25 batters.

Junior Geoff Klein leads the broncos with 10 RBIs, while senior Long has registered two home runs thus far. Junior Tommy Medica has a .429 batting average and seven doubles, and junior Jon Karcich has five doubles and a .371 batting average. On the mound, Garcia owns a 2-1 record and has struck out 25 batters.

Scouting UC Davis
The Aggies enter the midweek game with a 2-8 overall record. UCD is 1-3 at home. Ty Kelly is the only Aggie to start in all 10 games. Daniel Cepin leads the squad with six runs, while Grant Hirneise had tallied five RBIs. On the mound, Dayne Quist and Adam Bennett have earned wins. Last weekend, UCD was swept by Portland. In game one of the Saturday doubleheader, Kelly and Tony Bongiovanni registered home runs as the Aggies were edged 10-9.

Last season, the Aggies won all four games of the series against the Broncos. It was the Broncos longest losing streak of the year.

The Big Red enters the weekend with a 2-1. Cornell has seen three of its games cancelled this season due to inclement weather. Nate David leads the squad with a .400 batting average, while Jadd Schmeltzer has a .667 slugging percentage and a .500 on base percentage. On the mound, Mickey Brodsky and Matt Hill have earned wins. In its last outing, the Big Red fell 7-2 to La Salle.
