STANFORD - The Santa Clara baseball team fell 11-1 to Stanford Monday night at Sunken Diamond. With the win, the Cardinal take the non-conference series. The Broncos will look to prevent the sweep on Wednesday, May 6 at Stephen Schott Stadium.
Stanford starter Scott Snodgress (1-2) earned his first win of the season after three innings in which he gave up no runs on four hits. The loss went to SCU starter Steve Kalush (1-4).
The Broncos were nearly shutout until the ninth inning when junior Geoff Klein scored the lone run. Klein hid a leadoff single and then advanced to second on a passed ball. With a Brady Fuerst fly out, Klein moved to third and then scored, unearned, on an Andrew Biancardi base hit.
Stanford out-hit Santa Clara 18-8, while strikeouts were tied at four a piece.
After Stanford claimed a 7-0 lead before Santa Clara was able to garner any hits. In the third inning, the Broncos loaded the bases with one out on the board. Curtis Wagner, Kyle Van Dusen and Kevin Madden each registered a single to get on base. However, no runners could score before the third out was registered.
Santa Clara had other opportunities in the fifth and sixth but could not drive a runner home.
The Broncos return to West Coast Conference action with a three-game home series against the Bulldogs of Gonzaga. The first game is scheduled for Friday, April 24 at 7 p.m. at Schott Stadium. The Broncos and Zags continue action on Saturday, April 25 at 6 p.m. and conclude the series on Sunday, April 26 at 1 p.m.
