SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Preseason West Coast Conference favorites San Diego scored three runs in the first inning and four more in the sixth and beat visiting Santa Clara 10-2 Friday afternoon at Cunningham Stadium.
San Diego (18-15; 4-0 WCC) improves to 4-0 in the WCC. Starter Kyle Blair fanned seven through eight innings to pick up his third win. Blair (3-3) lowered his season ERA to 3.73.
Santa Clara (14-17; 1-5 WCC) lost for the fifth time in six WCC games to start the league season. Senior starter Nate Garcia was lifted during USD's four-run sixth. Garcia (2-6) walked six and was charged with eight earned runs.
USD first baseman Victor Sanchez hit a homerun for the Toreros. Seven of the nine USD starters registered hits. James Meader went 2-for-4 with three RBI. The Toreros out-hit SCU 11-8.
Cory Hall pitched three innings in relief of Garcia. Geoff Klein and Lucas Herbst each had two hits for the Broncos. Klein hit a sac fly which scored Herbst in the top of the first inning before USD responded with 10 unanswered runs to take control.
The series continues Saturday and Sunday in San Diego. Game times are scheduled for 1 p.m.
