Baseball Drops Game to Cross-Town Rival 5-1

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University baseball team dropped its second game of the season to San Jose State Tuesday night at Buck Shaw Stadium, this time by a score of 5-1. The Spartans scored their five runs in five different innings to sweep the season series between the cross-town rivals.

San Jose State (30-12) took an early lead in the first inning as Travis Becktel scored an unearned run on a RBI single by Gabe Lopez. Becktel had reached base on an error by Bronco shortstop Pat Peavey to open the game.

Santa Clara (16-22) gave up one run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to fall behind the Spartans by a 4-0 score before scoring their only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Peavey picked up the RBI single to left field scoring A.J. LaBarbera from second base after he had reached base with his second single of the night.

The Spartans tagged on one more run in the ninth inning to move the score to its final of 5-1 when Dino Quintero sent a RBI double down the right field line.

Jeremy Rogelstad picked up his sixth win of the season for SJSU after throwing six full innings in which he allowed one run on only six Bronco hits. Donald Gemmell notched his third save of the season, throwing the final three innings of scoreless relief.

John Redmond fell to 3-5 on the season after allowing four Spartan runs on 10 hits. A.J. Ampi threw one inning of relief, while Grant Feichtmeir threw the final 1 1/3innings in which he struck out his 14th batter of the season.

The Broncos will return to West Coast Conference action this weekend at Buck Shaw Stadium, as they host the University of Portland in a three-game series. The first pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday's contests will begin at 1 p.m.
