Baseball Blanks San Francisco, Sweeps Weekend Series
April 7, 2002
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University baseball team registered its first series sweep of the season with a 4-0 shutout over the University of San Francisco Sunday afternoon at Buck Shaw Stadium.
Starting pitcher Matt Travis was in control for Santa Clara from the beginning, throwing 6 2/3 innings of work in which he allowed no runs on only four hits while striking out six. San Francisco (8-27, 1-13 WCC) never really threatened to score in the game as the Dons were unable to put together a multi-hit inning.
Santa Clara increased its lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning when a Headley ground ball was misplayed by USF shortstop Armand Gaerlan, allowing Joey Gomes to score from second base. The Broncos scored their fourth and final run in the seventh inning when Wallace singled home Headley for the second time in the game, this time up the middle of Don relief pitcher Steve Moses.
Travis gave way to John Redmond for the Broncos in the seventh inning. Redmond threw 1 2/3 innings in relief before walking the bases loaded in the top of the ninth inning, bringing the tying run to the plate and forcing Santa Clara to bring in closer Grant Feicthmeir.
Feichtmeir was to face designated hitter Alfonso Valdez, but USF opted for the left-handed swing of Ryan Sittauer against the submariner Feicthmeir. Sittauer grounded weakly into a 1-2-3 double play to end the game and give the Broncos the series sweep. Feichtmeir picked up his sixth save on the year, while Travis improved to 3-1 on the season.
Wallace finished the game for Santa Clara by going 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Jack Headley went 2-for-3 with two runs scored while picking up his 14th stolen base of the season.
Santa Clara will return to action next weekend in San Diego, Calif., as the Broncos continue their inter-division play in the WCC, taking on WCC West Division leader, the University of San Diego. The three-game set is scheduled for April 12-14, with the first pitches coming at 3 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
