SPOKANE, Wash. - Santa Clara continued its undefeated run in the West Coast Conference on Saturday afternoon as the Broncos (10-15, 7-0 WCC) scored four unearned runs in the top of the 10th inning to defeat Gonzaga (8-13, 2-5 WCC) 8-4 at August/A.R.T. Stadium in Spokane.
The Broncos jumped on the board in the opening frame as Mike Theoharis tripled to start the game. Joe Dieferderfer then grounded out to score Theoharis and give SCU a 1-0 lead. Gonzaga would knot the score in the bottom of the second when Danny Evans doubled home John Gebbers after Gebbers singled and reached second on a Broncos throwing error.
Gonzaga would tack on two more runs in the third as Kevin Richardson extended his hitting streak to 14 games with an RBI double that scored Barry Matthews. Richardson would come around to score on Jared Hertz's RBI single to right.
Santa Clara quickly responded in their half of the fourth as Matt Queen doubled home Jack Headley. Queen would even the score at 3-3 when he scored on a ground out by John Hilvert. The Zags then appeared ready to seal the victory when Gebbers homered to left center in the bottom of the seventh. Santa Clara was able to scratch together a run on a bases loaded walk in the eighth.
An error to open the Broncos tenth set the Santa Clara rally in motion as Queen doubled to send Headley to third base with no outs. GU relief pitcher David Hixson (2-4) then hit Pat Peavey to load the bases and walked Hilvert to score the first Santa Clara run of the inning. An error on the next batter would plate the next second Bronco run and Theoharis delivered a two-out single to break open the inning. Chad Fillinger (4-1) would pitch 2.1 innings of two-hit relief to pick up the win.
Richardson, Hertz, Gebbers and Evans all finished with two hits for the Zags while Theoharis collected three hits to lead the Broncos. Headley and Queen rounded out the double-digit Broncos with two hits each. The teams will play game two of this three game WCC series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
