SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The big inning doomed Santa Clara for the second time in its extended series with San Diego State. The Broncos allowed the Aztecs to score seven times in the fifth and five more in the eighth en route to losing 13-6 Monday night.
Santa Clara (7-10) has now lost three straight to SDSU (9-10) at Tony Gwynn Stadium over the past three days. In Saturday's series opener, it was a six-run SDSU fifth inning proving to be the difference as the Aztecs rallied to win 7-5.
Cory Vaughn, Jordan Van Hoosier and Matt Parker each had two RBI hits in the fifth off SCU starter Jon Hughes (2-1) - a redshirt freshman and high school All-American from Morgan Hill.
The Aztecs finished the night with 16 hits and mid-reliever Drew Leary (1-1) would be credited with the win. Leary pitched four innings and allowed seven hits before being pulled when SCU threatened to tie the game in the seventh.
The Broncos scored twice in the seventh, cutting the lead to 8-6 before being turned away with an inning-ending strikeout with the bases loaded.
The Aztecs then added plenty of insurance in the bottom of the eighth, plating five more runs, three on an RBI double by Vaughn.
Vaughn had two doubles and drove in five. Van Hoosier went 3-for-4 with three RBI.
SDSU will try for a four-game sweep when the series concludes Tuesday at 1 p.m.
