SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Geoff Klein and Nathan Faulkner belted two-run home runs in a six-run first-inning uprising and Santa Clara baseball held on to beat Cal Poly 8-5 Wednesday night at Baggett Stadium. With the win, SCU improved to 10-3 on the season, while Cal Poly fell to 6-7.
A single to right centerfield by Gabe Alcantar starting things off in the first inning as Tommy Medica scored on the play. Medica reached two at bats earlier on a fielder's choice. The Broncos went on to score five more runs in the top of the first.
Ryan Conan then scored on a wild pitch to Klein. Klein then homered to left field, bringing Alcantar in as well. Adding on two more runs for SCU was Faulkner with his late first inning home run to left field that allowed Jon Karcich to score as well. Karcich singled to right field in the previous at bat. The Broncos led 6-0.
The Mustangs got on the scoreboard after DJ Gentile tripled to centerfield and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Ryan Lee in the second inning. Both teams were held scoreless in the third inning, but the Broncos added another two runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings to reach their final tally.
Faulkner hit a leadoff double to left centerfield to get on base and then advanced to third as Brady Fuerst flied out to centerfield. He then scored on the next at bat as Matt Long grounded out to second base.
Conan gave the Broncos their eighth run of the night in the fifth inning. As the leadoff batter, he walked and then advanced to second on a passed ball. With Alcantar's double to right centerfield, Conan scored. The Broncos put three more runners into scoring position that inning but were unable to widen their lead any farther.
Cal Poly had three straight successful innings as it brought in four more runs. Late in the fifth inning Luke Yoder doubled to left centerfield to bring home J.J. Thompson and Kyle Smith. It was then the Broncos made a pitching change. Replacing starting pitcher Matt Wickswat was freshman Thain Simon. Simon would eventually earn the win for the Broncos after 1.2 innings of relief.
In the sixth inning, Brent Morel scored for the Mustangs after walking and advancing to second on a wild pitch. His run made the score 8-4. After a quick 1-2-3 top of the seventh for the Broncos, Wes Dorell scored Cal Poly's final run of the night after getting on base with a single to right field and advancing home on a throwing error.
The Broncos return to action on Friday, March 14 against the Aggies of UC Davis. First pitch in the weekend's four game series is scheduled for 2 p.m. on the campus of UC Davis. Santa Clara returns home on Saturday, March 15 to host a 1 p.m. doubleheader and then is back in Davis on Sunday, March 16 for the final game of the series. The start time is slated for 1 p.m.
