COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Santa Clara University baseball team began its three-game series with a 12-2 loss to No. 12 Texas A&M Friday evening at C.E. "Pat" Olsen Field. The loss drops the Broncos' record to 11-9 while the Aggies improved to 16-2 on the year.
Texas A&M got things started off quickly, scoring a run on two hits in the first, adding two more runs on three hits in the second, and building a 4-0 lead in the third inning with a run on two hits.
Santa Clara got on the board in the fourth inning as Dustin Realini sent a two-out single up the middle and moved to second when Michael Thompson was hit by a pitch. Mark Folgner then stepped to the plate and singled to right field bringing Realini home as he jarred the ball loose from the A&M catcher with a hard slide.
The Aggies responded with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to increase their lead to 9-1. Texas A&M scored their runs on four hits in the frame, all of which were singles, to go along with an intentional walk and a catcher's interference that extended the inning.
A&M picked up in the fifth inning right where it left off in the previous frame, banging out back-to-back singles before a triple by Cliff Pennington made the score 11-1. Pennington scored the 12th run of the game for the Aggies as he scored on a sacrifice fly from Cory Patton.
Santa Clara scored its second run of the game in the top of the sixth inning as Realini again singled with two outs, but this time he moved to second on a single through the left side by Michael Thompson. Folgner picked up his second RBI on the night with a sharp single up the middle that was knocked down by the second baseman who threw behind Thompson for the third out of the inning, but not before Realini scored for the second time.
Bronco starter Chad Fillinger got roughed up on the evening, giving up 12 earned runs on 16 hits with two walks and one strikeout in five full innings of work as he fell to 3-3 on the season. Scott Lonergan did not allow a hit in his one inning of relief while Andrew Slorp allowed only one hit, but no runs in his one inning on the mound.
Folgner was the offensive standout on the night for Santa Clara, finishing the game by going 2-for-3 with two RBI while Realini also went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Michael Thompson also went 2-for-3 while Nic Crosta and Eric Newton each picked up a hit on the evening.
Patton and Erik Schindewolf each pounded out three hits on the evening for Texas A&M with the duo combining for three RBI. Pennington added a pair of RBI on the night while catcher Craig Stinson went 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
Aggie starter Justin Moore improved to 3-0 on the year as he tossed six full innings in which he allowed only two runs on seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Austin Creps threw the final three innings for Texas A&M, allowing no runs on only one hit for his first save of the season.
