SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University baseball team dropped an 8-6 decision to Sacramento State Wednesday afternoon at Buck Shaw Stadium. The loss moves the Broncos' record to 11-8 overall while upping the Hornets mark to 12-11.
After jumping out to an early 3-0 lead through three innings, Santa Clara found itself trailing after the top of the fourth inning as Sacramento State scored four times to take a one run lead. The Broncos answered right back with three of their own in the bottom of the fourth for a 6-4 advantage.
Unfortunately, for the Broncos, they could score no more as the Hornets added three runs in the fifth and one more in the seventh for an 8-6 lead that they would not relinquish.
Billy Sinacori picked up the win for Sacramento State as he allowed only two hits in his four innings of relief while walking one and striking out three. Renecke Stelzriede picked up his first save of the season, tossing a ninth inning in which he allowed only one hit.
John Acha led the CSUS offense by going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI. Brett Flowers went 3-for-4 with one run scored and four RBI. Both Acha and Flowers homered in the game.
Reliever Patrick McBride gave up three runs on three hits in the fifth inning to fall to 0-1 on the season. Scott Lonergan gave up four runs on only two hits but walked three in his appearance in the fourth inning.
