Santa Clara, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's baseball team topped San Jose State in an offensive battle at Buck Shaw Stadium Sunday afternoon ending in a score of 17-6. The Broncos improved their record to 11-7 beating SJSU (9-10-1) to take the weekend series two games to one.
Nic Crosta led the Broncos with four hits, three runs and four RBI's, but it was his three-run homerun that sparked the Broncos spirits in the bottom of the first. Robert Perry posted three hits for the Broncos, including his third homerun of the season. Michael Thompson and Will Thompson each notched three hits for the day while Mark Folgner and Matt McColgan collected two. Both Michael Thompson and McColgan earned three RBI's. Eric Newton posted an RBI with his first triple of the season while Michael Thompson and McColgan each earned three.
John Redmond earned his fourth win of the season for SCU pitching four innings with six runs on eight hits, and walking three to keep his perfect record alive. Garnering his fourth save of the season was the Broncos fourth pitcher of the day, Anthony Rea, as he shut out the Spartans for three innings while punching out four.
The Spartans went six men deep into their bullpen. Jose Amaya was pulled in the second after allowing seven runs on seven hits while striking out only two. Next in line was Brandon Dewing who took the loss for SJSU tossing 3-plus innings with two runs on six hits. Matt Winck and Randy Waite followed, each allowing three hits while Danny Gemma allowed two runs on two hits with Sean Farrell coming in to close out the game.
Leading San Jose State with two hits each were Anthony Contreras and Scott Niheu. Mark Bautista's fifth-inning double helped score three of the Spartans six runs.
The Broncos take on the Sacramento State Hornets this Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. here at Buck Shaw Stadium.
