SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University baseball team took game number one of the Rivalry Series topping San Jose State 8-3 Friday afternoon at Buck Shaw Stadium. SCU came out strong scoring four to gain a first-inning lead that was never broken.
Chad Fillinger punched out nine Spartan batters and allowedonly three runs on eight hits while walking two in 7-plus innings and improving his record to 3-2. Thomas Van Buskirk followed, facing only one batter to end the eighth inning. Scott Lonergan took the mound in the ninth to close the game striking out two of his four batters faced.
The Broncos notched 17 hits for the day, led by Jason Metteucci and Nic Crosta, each posting three. Will Thompson, Dustin Realini, Mark Folgner and Eric Newton each had two hits and one RBI. Matt McColgan added a team leading 2 RBI's while Robert Perry posted two hits for the day.
Corey Cabral took the loss for the Spartans as he allowed seven runs on 13 hits, walking one and striking out only two. Danny Gemma follwed Cabral allowing one run on three hits while striking out two. Danny Anderson finished off the game for the Spartans allowing only one hit.
Anthony Contreras generated three hits for the San Jose State with third baseman Josh Lansford putting up two including a lead-off homerun in the top of the second.
The Broncos will visit the Spartans at Municipal Stadium for game number two. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. The two teams will conclude their three game series at Buck Shaw Stadium Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
