SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - John Redmond threw seven solid innings and Dustin Realini drove in four runs during Santa Clara University's 5-3 victory over Cal Poly Sunday afternoon at Baggett Stadium in San Luis Obispo, Calif. The win gives the Broncos their third series win of the season and improves their record to 9-6 while dropping the Mustangs to 14-7-1.
Senior John Redmond improved to 3-0 on the season for Santa Clara as he threw seven full innings in which he allowed three runs on only five hits while walking one and striking out four. Anthony Rea picked up his third save of the season as he allowed only one hit in the final two innings on the mound.
Sophomore transfer Dustin Realini went 3-for-4 at the plate with one run scored and four RBI. His fourth RBI of the game came on his second home run of the season during the seventh inning. Fellow sophomore Eric Newton picked the team's other RBI on a single to left field in the fourth.
Garrett Olson took the loss for the Mustangs, his first of the season, falling to 3-1 after allowing four SCU runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings of work. Kevin Waldron allowed one run on three hits in 2 2/3 innings of relief.
Brandon Roberts went 2-for-4 on the day with one run scored and extended his school-record hitting streak to 18 games with his single in the first inning. Sam Herbert went 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI that came on a two-run homerun in the bottom half of the seventh inning.
Santa Clara returns to action next weekend in the Bay Area as they host cross-town rival San Jose State at Buck Shaw Stadium on Friday and Sunday. Friday's game is slated for 6 p.m. while Sunday's game will start at 1 p.m. Saturday's game will be played at Municipal Stadium in San Jose at 1 p.m.
