SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Geoff Klein launched a three-run home run in the seventh inning to keep the Bronco baseball team within reach, but the San Jose State Spartans won this year's cross-county rivalry with a game-two 10-7 victory at Schott Stadium.
Klein had four RBIs on the day, while Tommy Medica went 4-for-4 with two runs. On the mound, sophomore Thain Simon faced his first loss of the season after six innings of work. He allowed five runs, three unearned, four walks and only struck out one Spartan.
The win went to Max Peterson who also tossed for six innings. He allowed three runs and struck out five Broncos. The save went to Anthony Vega. It was his second of the season. San Jose State remained undefeated with a 6-0 record, while Santa Clara dropped to 2-4 overall.
SJSU registered four runs in the first inning. Santa Clara was able to get on the board in the bottom of the second inning with a Lucas Herbst RBI single. Brady Fuerst scored on the play. He got on base with a double down the left field line. The Broncos trailed 4-1.
SCU's defense quickly got them out of the top of the third and then the Bronco bats began to swing. Matt Long got on base with a solid single and then advanced on a Medica single through the right side. The senior from Los Altos then scored on a Jon Karcich double to left field. Klein drove in his first RBI of the day as he plated Medica with a ground out. SCU trailed 4-3.
Both the Broncos and the Spartans were kept scoreless through three innings and then both tacked on three runs each in the seventh inning. SJSU claimed a 7-3 advantage as Michael Drake hit a two RBI triple to right center field. Danny Stienstra then brought home Drake with a single up the middle.
Yet, Santa Clara was not going to give up without a fight. In the Broncos' half of the seventh, Medica was hit by a pitch and Karcich singled to get two runners on base. Designated hitter Klein then came up huge with his first home run of the season to right field. The Broncos trailed 7-6 with no outs on the board. Fuerst doubled and Chris Morton made his season debut, but could not bring in the tying run as he grounded out to shortstop Tyler Heil.
The Spartans added an insurance run in the eighth inning as Karson Klauer hit a home run to left field, 8-6. But the Broncos kept the score close with a bases loaded two-out walk to David Abraham that plated Curtis Wagner, 8-7. With the bases still full, Santa Clara tried once again to knot the score, but was unsuccessful.
Unfortunate for the Broncos, SJSU scored two runs in the top of the ninth to claim the 10-7 final score. Santa Clara was able to get a runner on base in the bottom of the ninth, but had two batters strike out and one fly out.
The Broncos and Spartans close out the series on Sunday, March 1 at Municipal Stadium in San Jose. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
