SUN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Santa Clara University baseball team dropped its series opener with Cal Poly by a 10-3 score Friday evening at Baggett Stadium in San Luis Obispo, Calif. The Broncos fall to 7-6 on the year while the Mustangs improved to 14-5-1.
Like their first meeting of the year, Cal Poly scored early and often, putting the game out of reach by the third inning. Last Saturday, the Mustangs led SCU by a score of 8-0 after three innings in their 12-4 win last week at the River City Classic. Tonight's score was 9-0 in favor of Cal Poly after the third inning thanks to a seven run third inning.
Santa Clara's defense imploded again on Friday, making four errors, including two in the first inning that led to the first two runs for the Mustangs. Brandon Roberts led seven Cal Poly players who had at least two hits on the evening with his three hits in four at-bats with two runs scored and two RBI.
SCU freshman Robert Perry collected two of the Broncos' five hits on the night, driving in all three runs, two of which came on his second homerun of the season. Will Thompson and Jason Matteucci were the other Bronco batters with a hit on the evening.
Jimmy Shull improved to 4-1 on the season for the Mustangs after tossing six full innings in which he allowed only two runs on three hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Gary Daley and Kevin Waldron combined to throw the final three innings, allowing only one run on two hits.
Chad Fillinger fell to 2-2 in 2004 for SCU after allowing nine runs, seven of which were earned, on 13 hits in six innings on the mound. Scott Lonergan threw one inning and allowed one run on two hits while Patrick McBride threw the eighth inning for SCU and allowed only one hit while striking out one.
Santa Clara and Cal Poly play game two of the three-game weekend series at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Sunday's series finale is also schedule for 1 p.m. at Baggett Stadium.
