SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara baseball team faced a tough 12-2 loss to California Wednesday night at Schott Stadium. The Broncos evened out to 2-2 on the season, while the Golden Bears improved to 3-2.
For the Broncos, Matt Long registered his first home run of the season, while Jon Karcich drove in a run. On the mound, Joe Supple received the loss after two innings of work. He allowed two runs, one unearned, walked two and struck out one.
For the Golden Bears, Matt Flemer earned the win. He tossed 6.1 innings, allowed two runs and struck out 13 Broncos. At the plate, Brian Guinn was 4-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs.
Santa Clara started off strong as senior Long tied the score 1-1 in the bottom of the first with a lead-off home run to right field. Cal had posted the first run of the game on a Brett Jackson scored as Jeff Kobernus flew out to left center field. However, the Golden Bears tacked on two more runs in the second inning to lead 3-1. The game was still within reach throughout the third inning, but the Broncos faced two quick innings.
Cal continued to widen the gap with two runs in the fourth, one in the sixth and five in the seventh. SCU was kept to just two hits during that time. The Broncos broke the silence in the seventh inning as Geoff Klein scored on a Karcich double down the right field line.
The Golden Bears reached the final score, 12-2, as Guinn scored on a Danny Oh single.
SCU continues action this weekend with a three-game series against San Jose State. The Broncos travel down the Alameda on Friday, Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. and Sunday, March 1 at 1 p.m. to play the Spartans at Municipal Stadium. Santa Clara will host SJSU on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 1 p.m.
