Feb. 13, 2004
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Matt McColgan and Michael Lange, Santa Clara University's eighth and ninth place hitters, combined to go 6-for-8 on the evening with three RBI and two runs scored. The sophomore duo led the Broncos (4-2) to a 6-2 victory over San Diego State (5-7) Friday evening in the first game of a three-game weekend series at Buck Shaw Stadium.
Senior pitcher Chad Fillinger improved to 2-0 on the season with a solid six inning outing that saw the right hander strikeout nine Aztec batters while allowing only one earned run on four hits. Fillinger, who was set to come out of the game after the top half of the sixth, was put in a position to win by his catcher, McColgan, whose RBI single in the bottom half of the sixth put the Broncos up by a 3-2 score.
Lange followed McColgan's single with one of his own, giving SCU a 4-2 lead. Freshman Robert Perry capped the Broncos' three-run, two-out rally in the sixth, immediately following Lange with the team's third straight RBI single.
Anthony Rea came on in relief in the top of the seventh inning with a 5-2 lead and promptly retired the side in order, inducing two groundouts and striking out one Aztec batter.
Will Thompson strode to the plate in the bottom of the seventh for the Broncos and delivered his third homerun of the season, giving Santa Clara a comfortable 6-2 advantage.
Rea again sent the Aztecs down in order in the eighth but ran into a little trouble in the ninth, loading the bases with only two outs. Kellan McConnell came on in relief and got the final out of the game on only three pitches for his second save of the season.
Fillinger's nine strikeouts on the evening tied a career-high while McColgan and Lange each set a new career best for hits in a game with their three base knocks. Lange extended his team-best hitting streak to six games.
No SDSU player had more than one hit. Jake McLintock and Ryan Wilson each had one RBI to go with their one hit. Jordan Swaydan and Landon Burt scored the runs for the Aztecs.
Santa Diego State starter Scott Shoemaker falls to 1-2 on the season after allowing four runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings. He did strike out seven Santa Clara batters while walking three.
The Broncos and Aztecs will play game two of the three-game set Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. with Andrew Slorp (0-1, 4.50 ERA) getting the start on the mound for SCU while Daryl Harang (1-1, 1.32 ERA) gets the call for SDSU. Sunday's series finale is also slated to begin at 1 p.m.
