KONA, Hawaii - The Santa Clara University baseball team improved its record to 3-2 on the season with a 6-0 shutout win over the University of Hawaii-Hilo (2-13) Saturday afternoon at Simmons Field in Kona, Hawaii.
The Broncos got on the scoreboard in the first inning as a Jack Headley triple scored Scott Shapiro and Michael Thompson to give SCU an early 2-0 lead. Shapiro led off the inning with a single to centerfield and moved up to third base as Tom Henderson's two-base throwing error allowed Thompson to reach base.
Santa Clara got on the board again in the sixth inning as Eric Newton scored from third base on a Jason Miyahira wild pitch. Newton reached on a single and moved up to third on a Jason Matteucci double down the right field line. Matteucci moved up to third on the wild pitch and scored one batter later on an A.J. LaBarbera single to right field which extended the Bronco lead to 4-0.
The Broncos added their sixth run in the ninth inning as Thompson scored on a Shawn Epidendio groudout after reaching on the first triple of his collegiate career just two batters earlier.
Matt Travis threw seven full innings to even up his season record at 1-1 after allowing no runs on only three hits while walking two and striking out five. Chad Fillinger came on in relief and threw the final two innings, recording six outs in the seven batters he faced.
LaBarbera finished the game with three hits while Newton and Headley had two hits apiece to lead the Bronco offense.
Santa Clara and and the Vulcans will conclude their four-game series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. (Hawaii Time) start from Simmons Field in Kona. Following that game SCU will return home for a three-game series with UC Irvine next weekend at Buck Shaw Stadium.
