Chad Baum was hired as an assistant baseball coach at Santa Clara University prior to the 2007 season. A veteran of four NCAA College World Series as a player and coach, Baum is the Broncos' primary hitting instructor, coaches third base, works with the team's catchers and assists in recruiting. Prior to coming to the Mission Campus, Baum served as an assistant for current Fullerton head coach Dave Serrano at UC Irvine and now-University of Oregon head coach George Horton at Cal State Fullerton. At UC Irvine he was the Anteaters' first-base coach, specializing in hitting instruction and tutoring the catchers. As a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater from 2001 to 2004, Baum helped the Titans to three College World Series appearances, including an NCAA National Championship in 2004. As a player, Baum captained the 1998 and 1999 Titan squads, leading Cal State Fullerton to the College World Series his senior season. A catcher, his expertise behind the plate also helped him tutor Fullerton's 2004 First Team All-American Kurt Suzuki, who was a second-round MLB draft choice of the Oakland Athletics. |
