SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball had three student-athletes recognized by West Coast Conference on Tuesday as the league announced the 2017 season awards and the All-WCC teams. Junior first baseman Jake Brodt was named to the 2017 All-WCC First Team while sophomore John Cresto earned honorable mention recognition. Center fielder Andre Nnebe was named to the All-WCC Freshman Team. The teams and season awards were voted on solely by the league's 10 head coaches.
Brodt was one of 13 student-athletes to earn first team honors. He led the way for SCU, starting in all 53 games. At the plate, he had the top batting average on the team at .338 and the most hits with 73. He recorded 21 doubles on the year, which is tied for the sixth-best single season total in program history and is No. 23 in the country on the year. Brodt was second on the team in home runs with seven and drove in 39 runs, tops on the club. Brodt's .991 fielding percentage was tops on the team as well. He was also named Rawlings WCC Player of the Week (May 1) for his part in helping SCU sweep Pepperdine. This is his first-career postseason honor from the WCC.
Cresto, who was also named to the All-WCC Freshman Team in 2016, had an impressive year at the plate for the broncos. He hit .307 with 65 hits including 16 doubles, one triple, 12 home runs and 29 runs driven in. He ranked fourth in the league on the year with his 12 homers. Cresto's slugging percentage of .561 was tops on the club and sixth in the WCC. He also led the team in runs scored with 37.
Nnebe, one of 10 freshman team honorees, started every game for the Broncos in center field and was consistent in the field and at the plate all year. He had the fourth-best batting average on the club at .293, with 63 hits that included eight doubles and three home runs. He was third on the team in runs batted in with 22 and first in stolen bases with 10 (14 attempts).
