Baseball's Herbst Gets Dream-Come-True Text
The Santa Clara baseball team ended with an impressive record this past season, finishing with the most wins since 2008. As the season closed and many seniors ended their baseball careers and prepared for graduation, senior Lucas Herbst (LH) received the text of a life-time declaring the continuation of his passion – baseball! Herbst was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 26th round. Herbst sat down with SantaClaraBroncos.com (SCB) and answered a few questions regarding his experience with the Broncos and what will come afterwards.

Bronco Baseball Finishes Successful Start to New Era
Transitioning into a new era that has the campus buzzing, the Santa Clara baseball team wrapped-up its first season under head coach Dan O'Brien on May 27 vs. LMU. The Broncos finished 2012 26-28, the most wins for the program since 2008.

Bronco Baseball Has Three Recognized by WCC
After finishing the season with 26 wins, the most since a 33-win season in 2008, Santa Clara baseball had three players honored by the West Coast Conference, as announced by the league on Wednesday. INF/OF Greg Harisis and OF Pat Stover were named First-Team All-WCC while OF Lucas Herbst was honorable mention.

Broncos Fall to LMU on Senior Day
Wrapping-up the first year under head coach Dan O'Brien and his staff with senior day at Schott Stadium, Santa Clara baseball lost its final game of 2012 vs. LMU by a final score of 4-2. The loss gives the Broncos a final record of 26-28 with a 5-19 record in WCC play while LMU finishes at .500 with a 27-27 record and 13-10 mark in conference.

Baseball Has Three Honored by WCC for Work in the Classroom
Getting ready to finish up a successful first season under head coach Dan O'Brien and his staff, Santa Clara baseball had three players named to the West Coast Conference All-Academic team, the conference announced Friday. Senior Paul Twining, junior Brock Simon and sophomore Zach Looney were all honored for the first time.

Bronco Baseball at the Next Level: Daniel Nava '06 Thriving for Red Sox After Call-Up
Outfielder Daniel Nava ’06 is off to a torrid start for the Boston Red Sox after being summoned from Triple-A Pawtucket. Since his May 10 call-up, the Redwood City native has been a fixture in the starting lineup, and is batting a whopping .350 with 9 R, 11 RBI and two homeruns in 14 games. He also has four doubles, 10 BB, a .491 on-base percentage, a .600 slugging percentage and an on-base plus slugging (OPS) of 1.091. With seven outfielders currently on the disabled list, Nava has provided much needed stability and production in his first MLB action since 2010.

In an offensive shootout, Santa Clara baseball took the finale of a three-game series at BYU by a final of 14-10. In its first-ever trip to Provo, Santa Clara baseball fell to BYU by a final of 8-6. The Cougars used a four-run bottom of the ninth to erase a two-run deficit and come out on top. Checking-In with Greg Harisis
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – With only a month of games left to play, the Santa Clara baseball season is on the home stretch of the 2012 baseball season. SantaClaraBroncos.com (SCB) was able to catch up with sophomore shortstop, Greg Harisis (GH), to talk about his experience as a student-athlete and how he plans to help the Broncos finish the season. Harisis has started 17 games while making 26 appearances overall and leads the team with a .412 (28-68) batting average. He has scored 18 runs to go with seven RBI and four doubles. This past weekend, Harisis blasted his first career home run on April 28 vs. Saint Mary’s over the right field wall at Schott Stadium. He has a terrific .467 on-base percentage that is helped by his six walks.

In its last home game for over three weeks, Santa Clara baseball picked up a 9-4 win vs. Saint Mary's in the series-finale. On a good night for offense, Santa Clara baseball lost to Saint Mary's by a final of 11-6. Santa Clara knocked around RHP Martin Agosta of Saint Mary's, a projected first-round pick in the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft in June, tagging him for six runs on nine hits, including three home runs but the Gaels' offense was too much. The loss moves the Broncos to 19-19 overall and 2-11 in WCC play. Saint Mary's is now 20-19 overall with a 4-9 mark in conference play.

Talking with SCU's Baseball Operations Assistant Kellen Lee
As the Bronco baseball operations assistant for SCU Kellen Lee has his plate full, especially with the transition from player to administrator. Lee previously played catcher for the now SCU Baseball Coach Dan O’Brien at UC San Diego, where Lee graduated with a double major in Communications and Psychology in 2011. Lee finished his career with a .996 fielding percentage and now is looking towards an administrative baseball career here at SCU.

UNIVERSITY OF THE PACIFIC ACCEPTS INVITATION TO JOIN WEST COAST CONFERENCE IN 2013-14 ACADEMIC YEAR
SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference announced Thursday that the University of the Pacific has formally accepted an invitation to join the WCC on July 1, 2013, for the 2013-14 academic year. Pacific was one of five founding members of the WCC (then the California Basketball Association) in 1952-53 and remained in the Conference until 1971.

With 13 days of rest, Santa Clara baseball (13-4) will return to the field Sat., Mar. 24 through Mon., Mar. 26 at San Diego in the first West Coast Conference games of the season for the Broncos. First-year head coach Dan O'Brien and the Broncos look to carry the momentum of non-conference play into the WCC season. The 13-4 record before playing a conference game is much better than last season. In 2011, Santa Clara was 11-17 before it opened its conference season.

The third annual Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament, co-hosted by Santa Clara and San Jose State, will be held from Mar. 8-11 on the campuses of Santa Clara and San Jose State Universities. The tournament is named after the late John F. (Jack) Gifford, an avid baseball fan and long-time supporter of several college programs all around the Bay Area, as well as at his alma mater, UCLA. He who passed away in January of 2010.

Santa Clara baseball (9-3) will take on Cal Poly on Tue., Mar. 6 at 6 p.m. before playing Thu.-Sun. in the third annual Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament. The Broncos will play Utah, Lehigh, Columbia and San Jose State in the tournament that is co-hosted by San Jose State.

Jacobe Ready and Prepared for Freshman Season
C.J. Jacobe’s dream of playing professional baseball came true when he was drafted by the Oakland A’s in the 45th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. Even though he was happy and honored to be drafted, he decided to continue to work on improving his skills to become an even better player. As a result, the Vacaville, Calif. native enrolled at Santa Clara in Sept. and is a freshman on the baseball team.

Santa Clara Falls To Late Rally
Looking to improve on its hot start, Santa Clara baseball played a tight game with Illinois-Chicago. A two-run rally in the top of the ninth gave the Flames a 7-6 lead, their first of the series. The Broncos were unable to mount a comeback in the bottom of the ninth and lost their first game of the season 7-6, moving their record to 5-1. The Flames moved to 1-4 in 2012.

Junior Chris Mendoza had a stellar high school career in San Jose, establishing new school records in career wins, single-season wins, strikeouts innings pitched and ERA. He was chosen as a 2009 ESPN Rise ALL-Bay Area honoree. The right-handed pitcher’s transition into college baseball was a difficult task, but he says it was also really fun.

The Santa Clara University athletic department is pleased to announce that for the first time since the 2010 season, select Bronco baseball games will be called on the Broncos’ online Game Central via Stretch internet. All eight broadcast will be done by a two-man student broadcast affiliated with Santa Clara’s athletic department. The crew includes John Nash and Brandon Rebboah. In addition to the eight broadcasted games, all home games will have free video streaming via Game Central.

Bronco Baseball Caps Undefeated Weekend With Win Over Louisiana-Lafayette
The Dan O'Brien era has started with a bang as the Broncos swept three games this weekend in Texas at the Bobcat Invitational vs. quality opponents. On Sunday the Broncos defeated Louisiana-Lafayette 8-5. On Saturday the Broncos defeated Texas State 5-4 in 13 innings and then Wichita State 2-1 in 12 innings. RHP Paul Twining (2-0; 4.50) picked up his second win of the weekend by pitching an inning in relief. RHP Mike Couch (0-0; 3.18) pitched 5.0 innings as the starter and only allowed two runs while striking out seven. The eighth inning saw nine runs scored after only four had been scored the previous seven innings.

Santa Clara baseball (1-0) won at Texas State (0-1) in the first game of the 2012 season by a score of 5-4 in 13 innings. RHP Tommy Nance pitched 7.0 innings while allowing seven hits and four runs with three walks and two strikeouts. The winning run was unearned and scored on an error by the shortstop.

In its second extra-inning game of the day, Santa Clara baseball (2-0) beat Wichita State (1-1) by a final score of 7-1. RHP Brock Simon (0-0) was turned in a terrific for the Broncos by going 8.0 innings, allowing four hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. LHP Powell Fansler (1-0; 0.00) picked up the win by going 3.0 innings and allowing four hits with two strikeouts. Santa Clara finally broke through with five runs in top of the 12th to put the game away.

Meet New Bronco Assistant Baseball Coach Mike Oseguera
When new Bronco head baseball coach Dan O'Brien came to Santa Clara from UC San Diego he didn't have to look far for one of his assistant coaches. Mike Oseguera (MO), a 2003 graduate of the University of San Diego, coached under O'Brien at UCSD for the past eight years where the Tritons compiled an overall record of 304-149 (.671) and played in eight consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association conference tournaments, collecting four wins (2005, 2009-11). A Chat With New Assistant Baseball Coach Eddie Smith
Eddie Smith (ES) has a chair from the 2011 College World Series sitting in his office which he got as a coach on the University of Virginia team that made it to Omaha. He was also a coach on the Cavaliers team that went to the 2009 College World Series. Santa Clara Announces Hiring Of Gabe Ribas as Assistant Baseball Coach
Santa Clara University head baseball coach Dan O’Brien announced Thursday he has hired Gabe Ribas as the team’s new pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. Ribas has experience both as a pitcher in the Big Ten Conference and the minor leagues and as an assistant coach the past five years at the collegiate level. Ribas has been at Northern Colorado for the past year.

After a solid rookie campaign, C/OF Zach Looney has taken his talents to East Texas for the summer. The young catcher is honing his skills in preparation for his sophomore season on the Mission Campus. During his freshman season, Looney was one of only two freshman to start 40-plus games for the Broncos. This summer, Looney is playing in the Texas Collegiate League for the East Texas Pump Jacks in Kilgore, Texas.

Santa Clara Names Two-Time National Division II Head Coach Dan O'Brien As Head Baseball Coach
A two-time Division II National Coach of the Year, Santa Clara University announced Thurs., June 30 it has hired Dan O'Brien as the new Bronco head baseball coach. O'Brien has spent the last 14 seasons as the head coach at UC San Diego, building that program into one of the premier programs at the NCAA Division II level. Dan O'Brien, the 36th head coach in school history in a baseball program that dates back to 1883, replaces Mark O'Brien after he stepped down in early June after 10 years at the Bronco helm.

Rising-junior catcher Anthony Martinez is playing his summer baseball in the Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League for the Kauai Menehunes in Honolulu, Hawaii. Martinez has started five games for the Menehunes posting a .313 batting average (5-16). On Jun., 18 Martinez started for the Menehunes at first base tallying a RBI and a run scored in a 6-2 victory over the Hawaii Aliis.

Santa Clara to host Cal's NCAA Baseball Super Regional This Weekend at Schott Stadium
After its dramatic 9-8 victory over Baylor June 3 to secure its regional crown, California will host Dallas Baptist in a best 2-out-of-3 NCAA Super Regional for the right to advance to the College World Series. The games will be played at Santa Clara's Stephen Schott Baseball Stadium, starting at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 11. It is the Santa Clara NCAA Super Regional nationally with the winner getting receiving a berth to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
