Broncos Best Pepperdine in 10 Innings

MALIBU, Calif.- Santa Clara (16-26; 3-10 WCC) topped Pepperdine, 3-2, in a 10-inning game. Patrick Terry provided the late-heroics for the Broncos, knocking in the winning run with a RBI single in the tenth inning. J.R. Graham (3-3) picked up the win for Santa Clara, tossing a hitless ninth and tenth inning. Starter Cory Hall pitched well for the Broncos, allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out four batters.

The Broncos got their offense started early. Zach Looney started the game off with a leadoff-walk and Lucas Herbst was plunked to put runners on first and second. After a flyball moved both runners, Terry hit a groundout-RBI. Later in the inning, Matt Ozanne hit an infield-single to extend the Broncos lead to 2-0.

After a scoreless second frame, Miles Silverstein hit a solo-homer in the third to shorten Santa Clara's lead to one run.

The Waves tied the game in the eight. Sam Meyer walked to begin the inning. A pinch runner advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Nate Johnson. Trent Diedrich hit a RBI single to knot the game at two.

J.R. Graham took the mound to start the ninth for the Broncos. Graham retired the side on two flyballs and a strikeout.

Herbst reached on an error to start the tenth inning. Kyle DeMerritt laid down a sacrifice bunt to put Herbst in scoring position. Terry came up with a clutch single to center to give the Broncos the, 3-2, lead.

Graham returned to close the game, retiring the side for the second-straight inning.

GAME NOTES: First pitch was thrown at 3:00 p.m….the game time was 3:03…Lucas Herbst recorded his fourth stolen base of the season… Pepperdine committed three errors…both teams left nine runners on base.
