SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Battery mates Kellan McConnell and Kris Watts earned West Coast Conference Pitcher and Player of the Week honors, respectively on Monday after leading SCU to wins over Sacramento State and nationally-ranked Washington last week. The award is the first of Watts' career and the second for McConnell after winning it in his freshman season.
A senior right-hander, McConnell picked up his first win of the season on Sunday as the Broncos defeated Washington, 5-2. The San Juan Capistrano, Calif. native recorded 10 strikeouts without issuing a single walk in a season-long 7.2 inning outing. He gave up only one run on eight hits in the first game of a doubleheader.
Watts, a junior catcher, led the Broncos in a variety of offensive categories over three games last week. He hit .556 (5-for-9) over the three contests and drove in a team-high four runs. The Fremont, Calif. native also hit his first home run as a Bronco, driving in three runs in a 7-4 win over Sacramento State on February 16. He also paced SCU with a 1.111 slugging percentage and 10 total bases.
The duo and the rest of the Broncos will return to action on Friday night when they host Cal Poly in the first game of a three-game series. The contest will begin a 6 p.m. The series against the Mustangs will continue through the weekend with Saturday and Sunday's games beginning at 1 p.m.
