Baseball Gets Eliminated from Postseason Race
May 17, 2002
MORAGA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University baseball team was officially eliminated from the West Coast Conference Coast Division race with its 5-3 loss at Saint Mary's College Friday afternoon in Moraga, Calif.
The Broncos (24-30, 14-14 WCC) started the scoring in the top of the third inning when Mark Folgner doubled and was followed by a Ryan Chiarelli single before both moved up one base on an A.J. LaBarbera sacrifice bunt. Joey Gomes brought Folgner home on a groundout before Jack Headley singled home Chiarelli to give the Broncos a 2-0 lead.
The Gaels (22-26, 14-14 WCC), who were coming off a five-game set with Pepperdine in which they were swept, answered right back in the bottom of the third with four runs of their own. Mark Teahen sent a two-run single to left field before Tim Spooner picked up what proved to be the game-winning RBI with a two-run double to right center.
Except for the four-run third, Santa Clara starter Matt Travis pitched very well, allowing only one run in his seven other innings on the mound. The loss moves him to 5-4 on the season despite picking up his first complete game of the season in which he struck out seven Saint Mary's batters.
Kevin Trochez tossed his third complete game of the season in which he allowed only two earned runs on nine hits while striking out five Broncos to improve to 6-5 on the season.
The win for Saint Mary's was their third in four tries against the Broncos. This loss for Santa Clara was especially painful as it mathematically eliminated them from WCC Championship Series contention. The WCC Coast Division representative will be either Gonzaga or Pepperdine.
The Broncos and Gaels will resume their season-ending three-game set with game two Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Louis Guisto Field on the SMC campus.
