SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University baseball team waited through a one-hour rain delay to make-up a game with Saint Mary's Tuesday night at Buck Shaw Stadium that was originally scheduled for March 17, but was postponed due to rain. The short delay seemed to work in the favor of the visiting Gaels as they scored four times in the first three innings en route to an 8-3 victory.
Santa Clara (20-26, 10-11 WCC) starter Joe Diefenderfer had his second consecutive tough outing, allowing four runs on five hits in five innings of work on the mound. Brian Houle made connected on a two-run single in the third inning for Saint Mary's (18-21, 10-9 WCC), giving the Gales a 4-0 lead after three.
Dane Dobrinich threw well for SMC, allowing only one Bronco run on five hits in six full innings of work, before giving way to Mike Byer in the seventh who threw the final three innings to pick up the save. Jeff Cunningham finished the game by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the Gaels.
A.J. LaBarbera led the Bronco offense, registering one third of the total hits by going 3-for-4. Joey Gomes went 1-for-4 on the evening with an RBI single, while David Mandley provided the only real thrill of the evening for Santa Clara fans when he delivered a two-run pinch-hit home run to left center.
Santa Clara will continue its current homestand this weekend as it welcomes Pepperdine to "The Shaw" for a three-game set beginning Friday evening at 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday's games are both slated for 1 p.m. first pitches. Saint Mary's will host Gonzaga in a three-game set in Moraga, Calif. beginning Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
