SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Santa Clara University baseball team picked up its 18th win of the season with a 18-1 win over Sacramento State Tuesday afternoon at Hornet Field in Sacramento, Calif.
The Broncos (18-24) defeated the Hornets (15-23) for the second time of the season, winning game one by a score of 7-5 on February 26th at Buck Shaw Stadium.
Scott Dierks started the Santa Clara offense Tuesday with a double to straight-away center field in the top of the third inning and would score just two batters later when freshman Ryan Chiarelli singled to left field.
The Broncos continued their hot hitting in the fourth when Joey Gomes led off with a triple to right center. Pat Peavey reached base when he was hit by a pitch and would score right behind Gomes when Headley tripled to right center, lifting the Santa Clara lead to 3-0. Jim Wallace picked up an RBI on the very next pitch when his sacrifice fly to centerfield scored Headley.
The Hornets scored once in the bottom of the fourth to narrow the Santa Clara lead down to 4-1 when Mario Celillo singled to center, stole second and scored on a Ryan Brown single.
Not even the Hornet Field sprinklers that came on could cool off the Bronco bats in the fifth inning as they added two more runs to the lead. The first run of the fifth inning came when Chiarelli scored from second base on a single to right center by A.J. LaBarbera. After a Gomes single to left, Peavey scored LaBarbera from third base with a sacrifice fly to center field.
After a scoreless bottom of the fifth, Wallace led off the sixth inning with a towering shot off the parking third floor of the parking structure that sits beyond the left field fence. Joe Diefenderfer followed that up with a single to center and would later score on a ground out to first base by Chiarelli.
Gomes picked up another RBI on his 22nd double of the season in the eight run eighth inning for the Broncos. Gomes currently ranks seventh in the nation in doubles per game heading into this week's play.
John Redmond threw six full innings for the Broncos before giving way to Chad Fillinger in the seventh. Redmond allowed only one run on nine hits while striking out four and walking none to pick up his fourth win of the season.
Wallace led the Broncos on the day, going 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles and four RBI. Gomes finished the day 4-for-5 with a double, triple and one run batted in.
Fillinger threw two innings of scoreless relief in which he struck out two batters before giving way to Grant Feichtmeir who closed out the game for the Broncos.
Santa Clara resumes West Coast Conference action this weekend against Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, Calif. The Broncos and Lions will begin game one of a three-game set at 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.
