Box Score

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University baseball team let another close game slip away, this time to Portland as the Pilots rallied for five runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat the Broncos by a score of 5-3.

Santa Clara (17-24, 8-9 WCC) scored once in the first, once in the sixth and once in the eighth to take a 3-0 lead into the ninth inning. Matt Travis took a five-hitter into the ninth inning, dominating the game leading into the Pilots' last at bat. The junior southpaw allowed five runs on four hits in the ninth, however, as Portland took the lead for the first time in the game on a Matt Hollod grand slam.

Portland (16-20, 9-9 WCC) took the lead and ran with it as Eric Hull closed out the game to pick up his first victory of the year after throwing 3 2/3 innings of work in relief. Cory Lunde picked up the other RBI in the game for Portland as his single to left field in the ninth scored Hull and set the table for Hollod.

Sunday's game marked the 10th time this season that the Broncos have lost the game in the opponent's final at bat.

Despite the loss, Travis pitched very well for the Broncos until the ninth inning. The loss moves his record on the season to 4-2. Pat Peavey continued his hot hitting, going 2-for-5 on the day, moving his total from the plate for the week to 10-for-18 with two doubles, one grand slam and eight RBI.

The Broncos will embark on a four-game road trip next week, beginning with Sacramento State Tuesday afternoon in Sacramento, Calif. The Broncos will take on Loyola Marymount in a three-game series in Los Angeles, Calif. next weekend, beginning Friday, April 26 at 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday's games are both scheduled for 1 p.m.
