MALIBU, Calif. - The Santa Clara University baseball team dropped another heartbreaker, this time in extra innings as Pepperdine came up with a big bases loaded single in the 10th inning to take the series finale by a score of 4-3 Saturday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
The Broncos (12-17, 3-4 WCC) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Joey Gomes and Shawn Epidendio led off with singles and then were driven in by David Mandley who connected on his first home run of the season.
The Waves (14-16, 4-2 WCC) battled back to narrow the lead in the third and fourth innings, scoring once in each frame. Cory Brightwell scored in the third inning on a single to left field by Ty Harper, while Jason Payne scored from third base on Joe Diefenderfer's sixth wild pitch of the season.
After a series of scoreless innings for both teams, the Waves began a rally in the eighth inning when they loaded the bases with no outs when Jason Payne grounded into a 1-2-3 double play. Diefenderfer, however, would give up the game-tying run just one batter later when Patrick Rooney sent a single into left field, scoring Chris Kelly from third base.
After going down in order in the top of the ninth inning, the Broncos got a perfect ninth from Deifenderfer who left the game after the ninth inning, allowing only two earned runs on nine hits while striking out six in his best outing of the season.
The Broncos again went down in order in the top of the 10th inning, while the Waves again loaded the bases in their half of the inning. This time Pepperdine was able to get across the winning run when Jason Payne singled home Duke Sardinha off Grant Feichtmeir who took his third loss of the season.
Santa Clara will return to action next weekend at Buck Shaw Stadium against the University of San Francisco. First pitch against the Dons is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday evening.
