March 29, 2002
MALIBU, Calif. - The Santa Clara University baseball team rallied from down four runs to tie the score at seven, but a Pepperdine home run in the bottom of the ninth gave the Waves a 8-7 win.
Pepperdine (14-16, 4-2 WCC) scored three times in the first two innings off starter Chad Fillinger to take an early 3-0 lead into the top of the third inning. The Broncos rallied to tie the score at three in the fifth, but gave up three runs in the bottom of the fifth and one more in the sixth as the Waves jumped out to a 7-3 lead.
Santa Clara (12-17, 3-4 WCC) showed a lot of heart and resilience in the seventh inning as they again rallied to tie the score, this time with four runs in the seventh inning to knot the game at seven.
John Redmond, who came on in relief of Fillinger in the sixth inning, pitched nearly perfectly in his 2 2/3 innings of work until Chris Kelly deposited a one-out home run over the left field fence to give the Waves the win by a score of 8-7.
The top five batters in the order for the Waves combined to go 14-for-24 in the game with seven runs scored and seven more driven in. In addition to Kelly's game-winning blast, the first baseman added a double to go with his two RBI and two runs scored.
Greg Ramirez improved to 1-2 on the season for Pepperdine after throwing 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief.
The Broncos and Waves will conclude their three-game series Saturday afternoon at Eddy D. Field in Malibu, Calif. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
