MALIBU, Calif. - The Santa Clara University baseball team dropped its series opener with Pepperdine by a score of 6-3 Thursday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium in Malibu, Calif.
The Broncos (12-16, 3-3 WCC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the top of fifth inning behind RBI singles from Shawn Epidendio and Joey Gomes. Starting pitcher Matt Travis cruised through the first four innings, retiring 12 of the 13 batters he faced, giving up only a bunt single in the fourth.
The Waves (13-16, 3-2 WCC) began a two-out rally in the fifth inning when Patrick Rooney drew a walk and Simon Ferrer followed that up with a two-run blast to left field. Brent Haapanen followed the dinger with a single to third base and advanced to third on a throwing error by Pat Peavey. Haapanen would score Pepperdine's third run of the inning just one batter later when Cory Brightwell singled to right field.
Alex Anderson scored for the Broncos in the top of the sixth to tie the score at three, but the Waves would score once in the bottom of the sixth and twice more in the bottom of the seventh to extend the lead to 6-3.
Derek Mills through three innings in relief for the Waves to pick up the save after Jacob Barrack picked up the win with six solid innings of work in which he allowed only three runs on five hits while striking out five.
Travis took the loss for the Broncos, falling to 2-1 on the season, despite allowing only three runs on five hits.
Gomes went 2-for-5 for Santa Clara with one RBI, and has now gotten multiple hits in each the last five contests. Epidendio also collected two hits, while Dan Vincenzi continue his hot hitting by going 2-for-3 in the ninth spot in the batting order.
Santa Clara and Pepperdine will continue their three-game series Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Malibu, Calif.
