SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University's baseball team assured itself of its first West Coast Conference series win of the year with a doubleheader sweep of Gonzaga by scores of 10-4 and 5-4 Sunday afternoon at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Game one saw the Broncos (12-14, 3-1 WCC) jump out to a 4-1 lead after three innings, led by Pat Peavey's three-run home run in the Santa Clara half of the third. After trading three runs with the Bulldogs (11-13, 2-3 WCC) over the next two innings, the Broncos scored three more times in their final two at bats to give Santa Clara starting pitcher Chad Fillinger all the cushion he would need.

Fillinger improved to 3-2 on the season and picked up his first complete game of the season in game one. He struck out a season-high nine batters while allowing only three earned runs on seven hits in the outing.

Peavey, Joey Gomes and Jack Headely each collected two hits and scored twice in the three, four and five spots in the lineup. The middle of the order finished 6-for-14 in the game with three home runs, six runs scored and seven runs driven in.

In game two, the Broncos and the Bulldogs played to a 1-1 tie after seven full innings before Gonzaga busted through with three big runs in the eighth inning to take a 4-1 lead.

Santa Clara went quietly in the eighth inning, but busted through for four runs on five hits in the bottom of the ninth to win its second straight, and sixth out of the last seven contests. Three of the Broncos four runs in the inning came with two outs.

Jared Anderson picked up the win for the Broncos after throwing 1 1/3 innings in relief of Joe Diefenderfer who allowed only on earned run on eight hits while striking out six in 7 2/3 innings on the mound.

Gomes went 2-for-4 in the nightcap with a RBI in the ninth and two runs scored in the game. Scott Dierks came up big for the Broncos in the ninth, picking up the game-winning two-run double in his only at-bat in the ballgame.
