March 16, 2002
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University baseball team dropped a tough game to Saint Mary's Saturday afternoon by a score of 5-3 at Buck Shaw Stadium.
The Broncos (10-14, 1-1 WCC) took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning on a Joey Gomes home run and a Scott Dierks RBI single to left field. But the lead did not last long as the Gaels (8-10, 1-1 WCC) scored two of their own in the top of the third to even the score at two apiece.
Saint Mary's took their first lead in the sixth inning as Tim Spooner scored on an errant throw to third base by catcher Jim Wallace.
Santa Clara rallied to tie the score in the eighth inning at 3-3 on Gomes' fifth home run of the year and second on the day. He finished the game a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two dingers, a double, two runs scored and two driven in.
The Gaels scored twice in the top of the ninth, both of which were credited to Bronco starting pitcher Joe Diefenderfer who took the loss despite throwing a tremendous game. Diefenderfer falls to 2-4 on the season following an outing of 8 1/3 innings in which he allowed four earned runs on only five hits while striking out three.
Matt Dolen threw a perfect ninth inning for the Gaels to pick up his first save of the year following a stellar outing by starter Kevin Trochez who threw eight full innings in which he allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out three and walking only one.
Brett Wayne picked up two of the Gaels' seven hits on the day in the nine hole of the batting order. He also scored once and drove in one run in the pivotal ninth inning for Saint Mary's.
The two teams will play the rubber match of their three-game set Sunday afternoon at "The Shaw." The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
