SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University baseball team opened up the West Coast Conference season Friday night with a 6-4 win over Saint Mary's on a cold night at Buck Shaw Stadium.

The Broncos (10-13, 1-0 WCC) fell behind early, giving up two runs in the first inning, including a solo home run to left center field by Mark Teahen.

The Gaels (7-10, 0-1 WCC) held on to that lead until Santa Clara scored once in the fourth and four more times in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead behind senior Joey Gomes who singled and drove in a runner in each of the two innings. The two singles followed a leadoff single in the second inning, giving him a 3-for-4 evening and pushing his season average up to .385.

Chad Fillinger picked up his second win of the season after throwing six full innings in which he allowed only two earned runs on six hits while striking out four. Jared Anderson and A.J. Ampi combined to throw two innings before giving way to SCU closer Grant Feichtmeir who picked up his fifth save of the year after throwing a scoreless ninth inning.

Mike Byer takes the loss for the Gaels despite throwing relatively well. The southpaw went 7 1/3 innings in which he allowed six earned runs on 13 hits, striking out two and not walking any Bronco batters.

Tim Spooner collected half of the Saint Mary's hits on the evening, going 3-for-4 with one run batted in. Jason Waugh and Brian Houle picked up the other two hits in addition to Spooner's three and Teahen's first-inning blast.

The same two teams will hook up Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. for game-two of the three-game series to open WCC play for both teams.
