SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University right fielder Joey Gomes was selected as the West Coast Conference/Rawlings Player of the Week Tuesday following last weekend's series against then No. 11 Fresno State.
The senior from Petaluma, Calif., went 5-for-12 during the three-game series, with a home run, double, two runs scored and five runs batted in. His offense led Santa Clara to a 2-1 record against the Bulldogs, and has positioned himself to be one of the most feared batters in the Bronco lineup.
Gomes began his season in spectacular fashion when he blasted an estimated 425-foot home run over the left field fence in his first at-bat in the bottom of the second inning. He followed that at-bat with a two-run double off the left-center field fence just one inning later.
It was his final at bat of the series that proved to be the most timely, as he roped a single to right-center that scored A.J. LaBarbera and Pat Peavey to give the Broncos a 2-1 victory over the Bulldogs that clinched the series win.
The honor for Gomes is the first of his career at Santa Clara.
