Cross Country Teams Finish Season at NCAA West Regional

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Santa Clara University men's and women's cross country teams concluded their 2001 seasons on Saturday at the NCAA West Regional in Tucson, Ariz., hosted by the University of Arizona.

The men's team finished 16th out of 20 teams in th 10K race. The Broncos finished ahead of cross-town rival San Jose State, Sacramento State, as well as WCC foes Pepperdine and Saint Mary's. Thomas Chapman was the top Bronco finisher, crossing the finish line in 80th place in a time of 34:08.4. Benjamin Gauen was the next Bronco finisher, crossing the line just two spots behind Chapman in a time of 34:10.0.

Freshman Devlin Croal crossed the line in a time of 35:53.2 while Ricky Brackett and Kevin Edwards finished in times of 36:12.3 and 36:16.6, respectively to round out the Bronco scoring. Stephen Moore and Mike Richmond also raced for the Broncos, finishing in times of 36:34.9 and 37:40.9.

On the women's side, the WCC Champions finished 21st out of 23 teams, beating out fellow WCC competitors Pepperdine and Saint Mary's. WCC Freshman of the Year Robin Bell was the top finisher for the Broncos, crossing the finish line in 79th place in a time of 24:05.0. Andrea Gastelum crossed the line next for the Broncos in a time of 24:08.8, good for 82nd place.

Milena Basile finished in a time of 25:18.4 while Katie Hansen and Kasey Shemwell rounded out the Bronco scoring, crossing the line in times of 25:41.5 and 27:35.5, respectively. Kristin Love also competed for the Broncos, crossing the line in a time of 27:48.6.
