Notre Dame Invitational Quote Sheet - 9/29/06

Sept. 29, 2006

Recap

Assistant coach Felipe Montoro, on women's race: "The women ran really well. Shannon ran a little faster than last year, Anne [Murphy-Hagan] continues to run really well as only a freshman, Lauren [Swigart] continued her resurgence, and Anna Wheatley had her best of the year. It was really nice to see her (Wheatley) come around."

Montoro, on women's team results: "It was tough because we weren't quite at full strength. On any other day we probably would have beat San Jose State, who is one of our rivals, but it is always nice to travel this far and place in the Top-10."

Montoro, on men's performance: "Chris Gumbs had a little bit of an off day, but Mike D[elaurenti] really stepped up to lead the guys. The freshmen ran really well, especially Alex Harkins and Stephen Koch."

Montoro, on men's team results: "We ran much better than last year, but unfortunately we placed the about the same. We would have liked to finish a little bit closer to Gonzaga."

Montoro, on course conditions: "We had been a little concerned about the weather, but it was as great day. The course was all grass which maybe made it a little slower than some of the other races courses we've run this year."

Shannon Bell, on her performance: "I'm pretty happy with how it came out. I improved 12 seconds on my time from last year. Times vary from course to course, so I'm definitely happy with it."

Bell, on the race: "It was a really fun day - fun to be here in Indiana. The weather was great and it felt like back home [in the northwest]. It was fun race, and good competition. The atmosphere was awesome. There were lots of people cheering and the scenery was nice with all the trees so it was great to be in such a nice setting."

Bell, on placing right behind San Jose State: "We were only four points behind them, and they are one of our rivals. We will definitely be ready for them at Regionals."

Mike Delaurenti, on his performance: "I'd say the race went pretty well. I went a more controlled pace this time. I was feeling really good through about the 3-mile mark. The fourth mile was tough, but I finished pretty strong."
