Santa Clara Cross Country Teams Each Finish Top-Five at Aggie Invitational
Sept. 23, 2000 DAVIS, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's and women's cross country teams each finished among the top-five college squads at the Aggie Invitational, hosted by UC Davis Saturday. The men's squad finished fourth among 21 teams, while the women posted a fifth-place finish among the 22 teams competing. Three Bronco men finished among the top-20 college runners, led by a ninth-place finish by senior Charlie Brenneman (Roseville, Calif.). The team's top finisher in both meets this year, Brenneman covered the 8k course in a time of 25:36.90. Junior Michael Helms (San Diego, Calif.) finished 14th with a time of 26:16.00, while Junior Thomas Chapman (Fremont, Calif.) was 17th in 26:31.40.Other scorers for Santa Clara included Freshman Ben Gauen (Seattle, Wash.) at 28th and junior Steven Moore (Vashon Island, Wash.) at 37th. On the women's side, Jenny Smokey was the Broncos' top finisher in the 5k race, covering the course in a time of 19:14.80. Smokey took first place in the USD Invitational two weeks ago. Anne Gastelum was 23rd in the race with a time of 19:26.70. Other scorers for SCU included Kristin Love (38th, 20:02.30), Milena Basile (41st, 20:06.30) and Katie Malinak (52nd, 20:25.60). Both teams will compete next weekend in the Stanford Invitational.
