SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Santa Clara University's cross country squads performed well at the season-opening Sacramento Invitational on Saturday morning, with the women's team winning the meet while the men finished second.

The women's team gave head coach Tom Service a nice gift to begin his coaching career at Santa Clara, having four of the top 10 finishers and winning the meet by 14 points. Jenny Smokey led the way for Santa Clara finishing third with a time of 19:13. Annie Gastelum (19:32), Robin Bell (19:51) and Milena Basile (19:55) rounded out the Broncos who finished in the top 10.

The men's team also had a tremendous outing, finishing second only to California by 12 points. Senior Thomas Chapman was the individual winner of the meet finishing with a time of 21:21, just three seconds ahead of teammate Benjamin Gauen and Martin Conrad of California.

The men's and women's squads will return to action on Saturday, September 28th at the Aggie Inviational in Davis, Calif.
