WALNUT, Calif./DAVIS, Calif. — Jack Davidson highlighted a busy weekend for Santa Clara track and field by posting the fastest 5000m time in program history Friday in Murdock Stadium at the Mt. SAC relays. The freshman's 14:23.35 broke Kurt Ruegg's previous best mark (14:26.63 at the 2015 Husky Classic) by more than three seconds.
Davidson's mark also bested Joey Berriatua's outdoor program record of 14:27.59, which Berriatua set during the team's last time out at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on March 31.
"Jack continues to run like a savvy veteran despite being in only his second season of competitive track," head coach Felipe Montoro said. "He makes it easy to forget he only started running track in his senior year of high school. He's just getting started."
The Broncos also competed on Saturday at Woody Wilson Track as part of the Woody Wilson Classic. Bevin McCullough posted personal best marks at 800m (2:23.91) and 1500m (4:51.51), both of which were good for sixth in their respective fields.
Wilder Boyden — competing at 1500m for just the second time in his collegiate career — won his section with a personal best 4:02.49 and posted the third-fastest time in the field overall. Boyden doubled back for an 800m personal best of 2:05.51.
"We had a lot of good performances at Woody Wilson lead by Bevin McCullough and Wilder Boyden," Montoro said. "[Associate head coach Pete Cushman] and I are looking forward to getting back on the track and competing at Fresno State next week."
The Broncos close their April Slate of competition Saturday, April 22 at the Frenso State Bulldog Invitational in Clovis, California.
