Sunny skies and warm temperatures met the Bronco track teams at UC Davis for the Aggie Open on Saturday. The men and women had some strong performances in the early season meet, highlighted by senior Erin McCarthy's new school record at 1500m.
McCarthy placed third overall and ran 4:36.05. "Erin ran a very patient and tactically sound race. She is still gaining fitness every week, so to start off with a PR and new school record is encouraging," said Bronco head coach Felipe Montoro.
Also running well in the women's 1500m was sophomore Allie Sibole, competing for the first time since last track season after missing the 2011 cross country season with a femoral stress fracture. Sibole ran 4:46.89. Freshman Jenn Nakamura set a lifetime best at the distance, slashing eight seconds from her previous best, running 4:51.54.
Senior Richard Zhu ran 3:59.07 in the men's 1500m to lead the Broncos in that event.
In the women's 800m, Junior Erin Hartwig continued her strong season running 2:19.75, a new personal best.
Guadalupe Gonzalez again led the men at 800m running 1:57.75.
The 3000m also provided some strong marks for both the men and women. Senior Austin Jones ran a new personal best of 8:37.63 as did sophomore Moises Venegas (8:40.65).
Freshman Mary Kriege ran a lifetime best in the 3000m as well, crossing the finish line in 10:13.61. Hayley Ney also set a lifetime best running 10:15.23.
A small group of Bronco track athletes will be competing next week at the Hornet Invite hosted by Sac State, as the rest of the team will stay home preparing for finals.
