SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The Santa Clara men's and women's cross country teams will be in Seattle, Wash. for the Sundodger Invitational on Saturday, September 16. The women's 6k race will begin at approx. 10:25 a.m. and the men's 8k race will follow at approx. 11:00 a.m. This will be the second time that Santa Clara has participated in this race.
The trip to Sundodger will be a homecoming for several members of both the men's and women's cross country team. On the women's side, senior Shannon Bell and sophomores Whitney Porter and Anna Wheatley all hail from the pacific northwest, and also A.J. Blumel and Chris Gumbs on the men's side.
"A lot of our kids are from the Washington area", said Head Coach Tom Service, who was excited for his runners' opportunity to race in front of their family and friends. "They sure do love to put on a show in front of the home crowd."
But for the Broncos, the hometown crowd will only add to the confidence they already have after strong performances in the San Francisco Invitational two weeks ago. Junior Chris Gumbs and Senior Shannon Bell each placed 4th in their races on September 2nd, and Mike Delaurenti for the men, and Anne Murphy-Hagan for the women, were very close behind.
The Sundodger Invitational will be a great opportunity for the team to represent Santa Clara University as the race is typically one of the biggest on the West Coast, featuring talent from many Pac-10 teams. It is worth noting that for the women, this is a 6k race, as opposed to the traditional 5k race, while the men's race remains the standard 8k. Some of the competition the Broncos have their eye on are the women's teams from the University of Michigan, University of Idaho, and the University of Washington, and the men's teams from the University of Portland, ranked no. 1 in the WCC preseason poll, and the University of Washington, whose men's team has won the event the last five years.
"We are looking forward to some great competition", Service said. "It's a very flat, fast course up at Sundodger, and our runners are running very fast right now, so we're hoping for some outstanding performances ."
