SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's and women's cross country teams will hit the road for the first time this season as both squads head to the Fresno State Invitational at Woodward Park in Fresno, Calif. on Saturday. The meet will be a preview of the NCAA West Regional meet, which will be held at the same course on November 13.
The women's race will get underway at 7:30 a.m. Defending Big West champion UC Santa Barbara and Pac-10 foe California will both compete in the women's race, along with seven other teams. The men are set to start at 8:35 a.m. with defending Big West champion Cal Poly and five other Northern California teams entered in the race.
Both teams claimed victories in the Bronco Invitational at Crystal Springs Cross Country Course on September 4. The Bronco women defeated both Loyola Marymount and this week's meet host Fresno State in their season opening race. The Bronco men posted a win over West Coast Conference rival Loyola Marymount.
Sophomore transfer Jessica Baldwin-Philippi won the 5,000-meter race last weekend in a time of 19:26.68 to help lead the Broncos to the win. Four Broncos placed in the top 10, while seven finished in the top 15. Robin Bell placed third in a time of 19:48.06. Freshman Ann Thomas was fourth in her first collegiate race in a time of 19:49.65. Lauren Swigart, Adriane Puetz, Katie Hansen, and Blossom Marimpietri also scored for Santa Clara.
On the men's side, eight Broncos placed among the top 15, with two in the top five at the Bronco Invitational. Junior Chris Doerhoff was the top finisher for SCU, taking third-place overall in an 8,000-meter time of 27:37.15. Freshman Christen Gumbs also had a strong showing in his first race as a Bronco, placing fourth in a time of 27:39.24.
