Oct. 2, 2001

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University cross country runner Thomas Chapman (Sr., Palo Alto, Calif./Mission San Jose) was selected as the West Coast Conference September Athlete of the Month on Tuesday as released by the conference office.

Chapman helped guide the Broncos to a second-place finish at the Sacramento Invitational, a third-place finish at the Aggie Invitational, and a fourth-place finish at last weekend's Big Cross Invitational.

Individually, he was the Broncos highest finisher in all three races, crossing the line first at the Sacramento Invite, fifth at the Big Cross Invite, and 13th at the Aggie Invitational.

Chapman's times of 25:52.0 at the Big Cross Invite and 26:05.9 at the Aggie Invite were the eighth and ninth fastest times, respectively, recorded by a WCC runner who participated in a 8K race this month. The 25:52.0 time at the Big Cross Invite was the fastest time that he has recorded since becoming a Bronco in 1999.

The honor is the first of its kind for Chapman in his career.
