Santa Clara Women's Cross Country and Track Announces 2007 Class
June 7, 2007
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's cross country and track teams announced their 2007 recruiting class today. The class features five freshmen runners and two transfers. Melissa Conlin, Ali Cottle and Riki Giachetti will all be freshmen next year for the cross country and track teams, while freshmen Jennifer Hinds and Jacqueline Lynch will focus on the spring track season. Transfers Erica Van Voast from San Francisco State and Stephanie Wilson from UC Davis round out the class.
"We are excited about adding a strong 2007 class to our deep returning roster," said head coach Tom Service. "Melissa Conlin should challenge for a Top 7 spot, while Riki Giachetti should have a strong first season as well. Erica Van Voast brings a year of experience with her in college and she made great strides as a freshman. Ali Cottle, Jennifer Hinds and Jacqueline Lynch should provide immediate help in track as they have all run very well in the 400m. Stephanie Wilson is looking to make a good transition back to running after attending UC Davis but not competing in cross country last year."
Renton, Wash. Native Melissa Conlin looks to have a big impact in her first season on the cross country team. A graduate of Oliver Hazen High School, Conlin finished in the Top 10 in 2005 and 2006 in the Washington Cross Country Championships. She also ran the 1600m and 3200m in track, finishing in seventh in the state in 2007 in the 3200m. She was the district champion in both distances this past spring.
From Campolindo High School in Moraga, Giachetti will also look to crack the Broncos lineup in cross country. Giachetti, a former soccer player, will focus on running at SCU. She finished 16th in the North Coast Section championships as her team took home the title.
Another Washington native, Ali Cottle had a solid career at Sammamish High School, running a personal best of 19:42 in the 5K. In track, she ran a 59.4 in the 400m, a 2:24 in the 800m and a 5:22 in the 1600m.
The final two freshmen of the class, Hinds and Lynch, both come from Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland. Hinds was a member of the 2007 California state championship 4x400m team, running a 56.8 split in that race. She also put up a 2:18 in the 800m during her career. Lynch meanwhile ran the 100m, 200m and 400m with personal bests of 12.53, 26.04 and 60.3 respectively.
The two transfers should also provide a good boost to the program. Van Voast arrives from San Francisco State ready to contribute right away. She was the 2006 California Collegiate Athletic Association Freshman of the Year after finishing 22nd at the CCAA Championships and helping the team to a program-best fifth-place finish. She placed 45th at the Division II West Regionals with a time of 23:20. She also ran an 18:45 in the 5K in track. Wilson returns to running after a year at UC Davis. She was a standout runner at Archbishop Mitty in San Jose prior to attending Davis.
