Crew Programs Finish Hectic First Day at the San Diego Crew Challenge

The Santa Clara crew programs began competition at the San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday on San Diego's Mission Bay. Between the combined men's and women's programs, the Broncos hit the water in eight races in the first day of the two-day meet. Both varsity eight boats competed in heats for the Cal Cup on Saturday morning. The men's heat was one of the first of the day as it began at 7:50 a.m. The Broncos placed fifth in the six-boat field in a time of 6:29.10. On the women's side, SCU finished sixth in its heat in a time of 7:32.67. Both varsity boats returned to the water later in the day. The Bronco women placed third in the Cal Cup Third race with a time of 7:37.07. On the men's side, the Broncos pulled a time of 6:35.81 to place fifth in the Cal Cup Third race. In novice eight action, the Santa Clara men placed seventh in their competition, crossing the line at 6:52.17. The Bronco women were also on the water, finishing sixth in their first race in a time 7:38.77. Later in the day, SCU pulled a 7:59.73 to place sixth in the Collegiate Novice Eight Third race. The women also raced in an open event, finishing fifth with a time of 7:40.89. Competition will continute tomorrow on Mission Bay for the conclusion of the San Diego Crew Classic.
