Graduating senior Raymond Cowels III has had an incredibly successful career as a part of the SCU basketball team. Four years ago, Cowels III came from Minnesota to California to pursue many young players’ dreams and play Division I collegiate basketball. It was no surprise that he was continuing his basketball career, as he lead his high school team to two state championships (2006 and 2009), was named to the All-State team twice and the All-Conference team three times.

Ashley Armstrong Awarded West Coast Conference Female Postgraduate Scholarship
Already named Valedictorian for the class of 2013, the academic awards continue to roll in for Ashley Armstrong of Santa Clara women’s basketball as she was awarded the West Coast Conference Female Postgraduate Scholarship. This will be the 10th year the award has been handed out and at least one Bronco has been honored six times, including three years in a row. Armstrong will graduate in June with a major in Anthropology and minors in Economics and International Business while posting a 3.9 GPA. Armstrong will begin her Masters of Philosophy in the fall at Cambridge.

Santa Clara University has long been known for its success on the soccer field and is the only school in NCAA history to have both its men’s and women’s programs ranked No. 1 simultaneously. From WCC titles to NCAA Championships to Final Four appearances, the Broncos have left their impact on the country and possibly the world. Santa Clara’s premier program was even highlighted by Hollywood in the 2002 movie Bend It Like Beckham, as the premier school for Keira Knightley’s character to attend.

Justin Viele Drafted by Baltimore Orioles - Updated with Quotes
Four-year Santa Clara starting shortstop Justin Viele will get a chance to continue playing baseball as he was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles with the 1,119th overall pick in the 37th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. He joins former teammate Lucas Herbst who was drafted by Baltimore in 2012 in the 26th round.

Bronco Athletics Administration Hosts Senior Send-Off For Student-Athletes
With at least 50 of the more than 60 Santa Clara graduates in attendance, and a number of Bronco coaches and administrators as well, Santa Clara Athletic Director Dan Coonan hosted the annual Bronco Senior Send-Off on Thursday night in the Leavey Center. It gave everyone a chance to say goodbye and to thank the seniors for all their efforts athletically and academically.

SCU 1 of Just 2 WCC Schools to Receive NCAA Public Recognition Award Eight Straight Years; 4 Bronco Teams Honored This Year
Santa Clara University was joined by Gonzaga University as the only two school’s from the West Coast Conference to earn Public Recognition Awards, based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate. The Public Recognition Award was given to 61 schools who placed at least one team on the list each of the past eight years. These awards are given each year to teams with APRs in the top 10 percent plus ties in each sport. In addition, this year four Bronco teams were honored for their APR's: women's tennis, women's outdoor track, women's rowing and women's water polo.

LOS ANGELES – Seven universities from the state of California have come to agreement to form a new collegiate women’s water polo conference that will begin competition in the spring of 2014. The new league, which will be called the Golden Coast Conference, will feature Azusa Pacific University, California Baptist University, Fresno Pacific University, Loyola Marymount University, San Diego State University, Santa Clara University and University of the Pacific.

The First Annual Kelly Classic
Next Saturday, June 1, we will be hosting a 3 on 3 basketball tournament in Memory of Michael Kelly. All proceeds from the team entries will go to the Michael Kelly Scholarship Fund through development. The entry fee per team is $15.00. The tournament will be a round robin format following the 3 on 3 Intramural Sports rules (this is not an Intramural Sports Event so no Championship T-shirts for the winners. There will be other prizes for the winning teams). At the end of the round robin there will be a single elimination tournament to determine the winning teams.

Trackster Oliver Feels The Bronco Love
After Santa Clara senior trackster Kevin Oliver finished 17th in the 10,000m Thursday night at the NCAA West Region Championship, he was quick to pay homage to his Bronco teammates back on the Mission Campus and the three who came to Austin to see him run: Haley Ney, Marcos Hinojosa and Adrian Hinojosa as well as his coaches, Bronco head coach Felipe Montoro and assistant coach Peter Cushman. Broncos Close Out Regular Season Track With Many Personal Bests, School Record
The Santa Clara University Track team wrapped up its regular season last weekend at the West Coast Invite at Willamette University. Senior Kevin Oliver continued his outstanding season with another personal best and another school record, covering 3.1 miles of the track in 14:27.81 seconds. The women head into the summer capping off one of its most successful track seasons in school history as the women added new marks to every event top 10 list from 800 meters through 10k.

Freshman Julia Peters (San Jose, Calif./ Presentation) was one of two freshmen to make First-Team WWPA All-Conference, while seniors Stephanie Clements (San Carlos, Calif./ Sacred Heart Prep) and Alison Norris (Saratoga, Calif./ Saratoga) and junior Claire Eadington (Corona Del Mar, Calif./ Corona Del Mar) were named Honorable Mention All-Conference. Santa Clara senior Kevin Oliver, making his season debut in the 10,000 meter race, made yet another mark on the track school record list by taking down the longest standing mark on the books with an impressive performance, running 29:47.08, at Mt. Sac Relays. Mt. Sac, historically a fantastic venue for distance performances, set the stage for Oliver's performance, which knocked 61 seconds off former Bronco Rory O'Flahtery's 1985 record.

Santa Clara Women's Basketball Has Successful 2012-13, Sets Bar for the Future
For the fifth consecutive season under Bronco head coach Jennifer Mountain, the Santa Clara women’s basketball team improved its win total. The Broncos won 14 games in 2012-13, including six in the West Coast Conference, matching its WCC total from 2010-11. Santa Clara also took on two teams that would play in the NCAA Tournament. The Broncos beat Fresno State 58-53 and fell to powerhouse No. 4 Stanford who advanced to the Sweet 16 after four straight Final Four appearances.

Getting a chance to continue playing basketball after her final season on the Mission campus, Santa Clara women’s basketball’s Meagan Fulps was invited to play on the NetScouts Basketball All-Star Team. Fulps, who finished her Bronco career at No. 7 on the all-time scoring list with 1,297 points, will travel to China and play nine games in 14 days. The U.S. team will take on teams from Brazil, China and Australia.

Santa Clara dropped two games on the first day of The Bronco Tournament, hosted at the Sullivan Aquatic Center. In the first game of the day, LMU got the best of Santa Clara, 8-2. The Broncos lost on a last second goal from Cal State East Bay, falling 9-8 in the afternoon.

For the fifth time in six years the Championship Series of the College Basketball Invitational presented by Buick will go to a winner-take-all third game after the Santa Clara Broncos (25-12) failed to close out the series in Game 2, falling at George Mason (22-15) 73-66 on April 3. Johnston has also gotten her first cap with the Women’s National Team, won the U-20 World Cup as the captain of the U.S. squad and won the Bronze Ball.

Kevin Foster's Record-Setting Night Leads Broncos Past Wright State and into CBI Finals
On a record setting night for Bronco senior Kevin Foster, the Santa Clara basketball team advanced to the final of the College Basketball Invitational presented by Buick with an 81-69 victory over Wright State in Dayton, Ohio. Foster scored 33 points with six threes and four steals.
What night it was for Kevin Foster who also is graduating this quarter. After scoring 34 points in the quarterfinal matchup with Purdue on Monday night, Foster becomes just the third Bronco with back-to-back 30-point games. The others are Dennis Awtrey (March 1 and 7, 1969) and Kurt Rambis (Jan. 4 and 5, 1980). Foster also moved into first place on the SCU single season steals list with 85 this year. His six threes put him at No. 5 all-time in the NCAA, moving past Stephen Curry, currently the Golden State Warriors point guard.
The win puts Santa Clara at 24-11 and ends Wright State’s season at 23-13.

Coming back to Indiana to play in front of almost 40 friends and family, Santa Clara sophomore Brandon Clark’s two free throws with 8.6 left on the clock helped the Broncos win 86-83 at Purdue University in the second round of the College Basketball Invitational presented by Buick.
Santa Clara has won 23 games for just the fourth time in the 106-year school history of basketball; and 23+ games for the second time in three years, having won 24 in 2010-11 when the Broncos won the CIT.

Broncos Win 22nd Game Of the Year Vs. Vermont to Advance To Second Round of CBI
Going on a 7-0 run over a 46 second-span during the last two minutes of play proved to be enough for Santa Clara as the Broncos defeated Vermont 77-67 in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational presented by Buick on Tuesday night. Santa Clara advances to the second round of the CBI and will play March 25 at the winner of the Western Illinois at Purdue game, to be played Wednesday night.

Santa Clara Hosts Vermont In College Basketball Invitational presented by Buick
After their most successful regular season in almost 20 years, the Broncos (21-11, 9-7) will host Vermont (21-11, 11-5) in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational presented by Buick on Tues., March 19 at 7 pm in the Leavey Center. It will be the first meeting between the two schools. The game can also be heard live on www.SantaClaraBroncos.com with KDOW 1220 am running the live broadcast locally at 7 pm. Broncos to Host Vermont Tuesday In Sixth Annual CBI
The 16-team field for the 2013 College Basketball Invitational presented by Buick is complete and Santa Clara (21-11, 9-6) will host Vermont (21-11, 11-5) in the first round at the Leavey Center on Tues., March 19 at 7 pm. The Western Illinois at Purdue winner will host the winner of the Vermont at Santa Clara game on Mon., March 25. It is the Broncos first post-season appearance since it won the 2011 CIT by winning its final three games on the road, including a thrilling 76-69 victory at Iona. Vermont finished tied for second with Boston University in the America East Conference with Stony Brook winning the regular season title.

Santa Clara, Calif. – Broncos’ pitcher Carissa Theis allowed just three hits in her second sterling pitching performance in two days, but the Broncos failed to score and dropped the second game of a doubleheader 1-0 to UC Santa Barbara on Saturday.
The Gauchos also won the first game, 10-1, behind a 12-hit attack. Santa Clara falls to 3-20 on the season while UCSB improves to 19-8.

Santa Clara fell 4-3, with the difference coming at No. 1 doubles where the Tigers edged SCU 10-8 in a tiebreaker. The loss snapped the Broncos undefeated streak at home – they are now 7-1 at the Degheri Tennis Center -- and their record dropped to 10-5 overall.

Keeping their unprobable run alive with their third win in three days, No. 9 seed LMU defeated No. 4 seed Santa Clara 60-58 on Friday night in the quarterfinals of the West Coast Conference Tournament. Santa Clara is 21-11 and LMU is 11-22. LMU advances to play No. 1 Gonzaga at 6 pm Saturday on ESPN2. It will be the Zags first game since taking over the No. 1 spot nationally on March 4.

The Santa Clara men’s soccer team has announced its 2013 spring schedule and it features five games, including four at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Broncos are coming off of a 11-6-2 campaign in 2012 and have posted winning seasons in 24 out of the last 26 seasons. The 2013 season will mark Bronco head coach Cameron Rast's 12th as Santa Clara head coach. Rast owns a 125-64-40 career record leading the Broncos.

The Broncos (20-9, 8-6) play their final regular season home game when they host Loyola Marymount (8-20, 1-13) for Senior Night on Thurs., Feb. 28, at 8 p.m. (PST). The five Santa Clara seniors, Marc Trasolini, Kevin Foster, Kyle Perricone, Niyi Harrison and Raymond Cowels III will be honored prior to the game and each will start their final regular season game at the Leavey Center. The game will be televised regionally on Comcast Bay Area. The game can also be heard live on KDOW 1220 AM with the broadcast beginning at 8 p.m. Anthony Passarelli is in his sixth season as the Broncos' play-by-play announcer.
Santa Clara clinched the No. 4 seed in the WCC standings with a 75-63 win at Portland on Feb. 23 and has an outside chance at the No. 3 spot. SCU needs to beat LMU and win at Saint Mary's on Mar. 2 and needs BYU to lose its remaining two games (vs. Gonzaga 2/28; at LMU 3/2) to capture third place. The Broncos have only finished in the top three three times in the past 13 years.

Bronco Baseball Hosts Five Games At Schott This Week - Starting With San Diego State On Tuesday
With the 2013 college baseball season in full swing, Santa Clara will host five games this week. The Broncos welcome San Diego State on Tues., Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. and Wed., Feb. 27 at 3 p.m. to Schott Stadium before a three-game series over the weekend with Northern Colorado.
Last week Santa Clara took one of three from Illinois-Chicago to move to 3-4 on the young season. Tommy Nance (0-0, 0.00) has had the best start for Santa Clara this season. Nance tossed 4.0 shutout innings with two strikeouts on just 34 pitches against Cal Poly on Feb. 18. Nance will make two starts this week, one vs. San Diego State and one vs. Northern Colorado.

Behind Career Records Day For Three Seniors, Broncos Win At Portland For The First Time Since 2007
Portland, Ore. – With a number of Bronco career records being broken or tied by three of the Bronco seniors, including Kevin Foster moving to No. 2 all-time on the West Coast Conference career points list, Santa Clara posted its 20th win of the season with a 75-63 victory at Portland for the Broncos’ first win in Portland since Feb. 10, 2007 (76-53).
Santa Clara is 20-9 and 8-6 in the WCC. Portland is 11-19 and 4-11 in the WCC. Portland has won three of its last five games. Santa Clara has swept the season series with four WCC teams this year: Portland, Pepperdine, San Diego and USF.
Kevin Foster moved to No. 2 all-time in the WCC with 2,211 career points scored, passing LMU’s Terrell Lowery (2,201, 1988-92). Foster tied the school record for career starts (116) and career field goals (712). Raymond Cowels III and Marc Trasolini tied the school record for career games played (128).

Coming Off 14th NCAA Tournament, Santa Clara Volleyball Adds Six+ Sand Volleyball Dates to Indoor Spring Schedule
Santa Clara volleyball, fresh off its 14th NCAA appearance in 2012, has hit the ground running this winter and is looking forward to both its indoor spring schedule and the sand volleyball schedule as well. After playing in an informal sand tournament last year in Malibu, Santa Clara will add at least six dates of sand volleyball during the months of March-April with the schedule to be released later.
In addition to their training schedule and competition dates, Santa Clara’s volleyball team will host the Fifth Annual Walk For Pancreatic Cancer on Sat., May 11, 2013 at 8 am on the Mission campus (more details to come so mark your calendar today!). The team has raised more than $90,000 over the past five years for cancer research.

Women's Basketball Can't Hang with Zags, Fall 70-55
Despite strong performances from Ruta Zurauskyte and Meagan Fulps, the Santa Clara women’s basketball team fell to visiting Gonzaga 70-55 Thursday night at the Leavey Center. The Broncos move to 13-13 overall, 5-8 in the WCC. Gonzaga improves to 23-5, 13-1 in the WCC.
Zurauskyte notched her fifth double-double of the season, ending the night with 19 points and 11 rebounds. She was one point shy of hit the 20-point mark this year, a feat she has accomplished three times this year.
Meagan Fulps scored 15 points, including 4-of-6 from distance. Ricki Radanovich ended with six points; the sharpshooter was held scoreless in the second half. The Broncos shot 20-45 from field goal range, for 44.4%. Raquel Avila dished out seven assists, tying her career-high.

Santa Clara's Trasolini Named Capital One Academic All-American; Vote For Marc for Senior CLASS Award
Already named a Senior CLASS Award finalist, Santa Clara senior Marc Trasolini was named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America Division I Men’s Basketball Third Team Thursday, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Trasolini is just the fourth Bronco basketball player in school history receive national Academic All-American honors and the first since 1996. Dennis Awtrey (three times), Pete Eisenrich (twice) and Brendan Graves (once) all were honored on the national list in the past for the Broncos.
Trasolini, a cum laude graduate in Finance in March, 2012 with a 3.62 grade point average, is in his fourth quarter of work on his MBA at the prestigious Leavey School of Business.

With winter in the rearview mirror, Santa Clara baseball opens its 2013 season on Fri., Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. at Schott Stadium vs. Seattle in the first of a three-game set. On Mon., Feb. 18 Santa Clara will host Cal Poly after sweeping the two-game set vs. the Mustangs in 2012. Last year Santa Clara won 26 games, the most any of the seniors had experienced. The 26 wins were a nine-win improvement over the 17 wins in 2011.

Trasolini Named To Capital One Academic All-District Team For Third Straight Competition Season
Santa Clara senior Marc Trasolini was named Thursday to the Capital One Academic All-District team, his third straight year of competition he has been named to the team. Trasolini, a Senior CLASS nominee, graduated Cum Laude with a 3.62 GPA in Finance from the prestigious Leavey School of Business in March 2012. Trasolini, who was granted a fifth year this year after tearing his ACL, is now in his fourth quarter of work on his MBA in the Leavey School of Business, which is ranked No. 19 nationally (MBA) and boasts a 3.56 GPA.

The Broncos open up the 2013 spring season with the Cal Winter Invite on Fri., Jan. 18 in Berkeley, Calif. They then return to the Degheri Tennis Center to host their first home match on Sat., Jan. 26th at 12 p.m. against UC Santa Cruz.

No. 36 Bronco Men's Tennis Open 2013 Spring Season Jan. 19 At Home
After completing the most successful season in program history, the Santa Clara men's tennis program will open 2013 with high hopes for another successful campaign. The Broncos’ outstanding and record-breaking 2012 was recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as Santa Clara opens the season as the nation’s No. 36-ranked program, a significant improvement from their No. 50 rank at this time last year.

Despite Kevin Foster's Record-Breaking Game, Broncos Fall to BYU
Despite Bronco Kevin Foster breaking the West Coast Conference for career threes in the first half, it was not enough as BYU put together an 18-0 second-half run to win 84-62. The Broncos will travel to Bay Area rival San Francisco on Thurs., Jan. 17 at 7:00 p.m. for a Comcast California television game. After playing at Pepperdine on Sat., Jan. 19 at 7 pm, the Broncos return home to host their final non-conference game of the year vs. CSU Bakersfield on Jan. 23 at 7 pm.

Santa Clara Hosts BYU in WCC Game of the Week
Santa Clara (12-5, 1-2) returns to the Leavey Center for an early season West Coast Conference showdown with BYU (13-4, 3-0) on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 1:30 pm. It will be televised regionally as the WCC Game of the Week on Time Warner Cable with Barry Tompkins and Brad Holland making the call. It can be heard on KLIV 1590 AM with the broadcast beginning at 1:30 pm Pacific. Anthony Passarelli is in his sixth season as the Broncos' play-by-play announcer.

Bronco Men Fall At LMU
In a high-scoring West Coast Conference bout in Los Angeles, the Broncos lost 84-80 at LMU on Thursday night. The Broncos turned the ball over a season-high 20 times, but had four players in double figures including a career-high 17 for Brandon Clark and Raymond Cowels III’s first-career double-double. Santa Clara is 12-5 and 1-2 in the West Coast Conference. LMU is 8-8 and 1-2 in WCC play. LMU lost its first two games in league play on the road to Saint Mary’s and BYU. Santa Clara returns home to host BYU at 1:30 pm on Saturday on the WCC Game of the Week on Time Warner Cable.

Fueled by a strong performance from senior Lindsay Leo, the Santa Clara women’s basketball team notched a victory in its home conference opener against Loyola Marymount. After a tight first half, the Broncos used a 10-0 run midway through the second half and held on to grab a 58-54 victory.

Bronco Men Travel to LMU For First WCC Road Game Of The Year; Game on WCC Digital
The Broncos (12-4, 1-1) will hit the road for just the fifth time this season when they travel to LMU (7-8, 0-2) for a West Coast Conference game on Thurs., Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. SCU split its first two WCC games of the season, defeating USF, 74-69, on Jan. 2 to break a 17-game losing streak to WCC opponents, and dropping a hard-fought 81-74 decision to No. 10 Gonzaga on Jan. 5.

Santa Clara Hosts No. 10 Gonzaga Saturday In Sold-Out Leavey Center
The Broncos (12-3, 1-0) host No. 10 Gonzaga (14-1, 1-0) on Sat., Jan. 5 at 5 p.m. in a regionally televised game on Comcast SportsNet California. SCU broke a 17-game winless skid against WCC foes with a 74-69 win over USF on Jan. 2, its first victory over a conference opponent since March 22, 2011 when the Broncos beat USF in the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com tournament.
The game vs. the Zags sold out Thursday morning, which is impressive considering the Santa Clara students won't officially return from holiday break until Sunday (dorms open Sunday). It is the sixth sell-out under Bronco head coach Kerry Keating and the first since the BYU game on Feb. 18, 2012.
