Broncos Fight Hard at USF, Fall Late
The 210th meeting with Santa Clara and San Francisco proved to be its usual slugfest at War Memorial Gymnasium. The Broncos led 38-32 at the half and the two team's traded leads three times in the second half before USF got away with an 85-69 victory. USF was working for revenge after the Broncos topped them 95-91 on March 22, 2011 in the CIT Quarterfinals on their home floor. Two wins later and the Broncos won the CIT.

In addition 70 student-athletes achieved a 3.5 GPA or higher this quarter and 79 Bronco student-athletes have a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA. Santa Clara Men's Basketball Hosts San Diego Thursday in Home West Coast Conference Opener
Hosting its first home league game of the year, Santa Clara entertains San Diego at 7 pm on Thurs., Jan. 12. Playing its 71st game, in a rivalry that began with a 66-65 victory by USD on Dec., 19, 1963, Santa Clara leads the all-time series 39-31, including 22-14 in Santa Clara. Santa Clara has won just twice in the last six tries at the Leavey Center, an 80-72 victory on Feb. 17, 2007 and then 60-56 on Feb. 12, 2011. Santa Clara swept the season series twice in the last 14 years (2007 and '11). Prior to last season, Santa Clara and San Diego split the season series three straight years, with each winning on the other's floor all three years. Santa Clara knocked San Diego out of the 2009 WCC Tournament and San Diego returned the favor in 2010.

Basketball Finishes Northwest Trip on Saturday at Gonzaga
Santa Clara finishes its first WCC road trip of the year on Sat., Jan. 7 when it visits Gonzaga for a 5 pm tipoff . This is the 77th meeting between Santa Clara and Gonzaga. Gonzaga leads the all-time series 45-31, including holding a 26-8 advantage in Spokane. Last season Santa Clara grabbed a 14-point win in Santa Clara on Jan. 20, 2011 and Gonzaga returned the favor in Spokane by winning 85-76 on Feb. 17, 2011. In its 85-71 win on ESPNU in mid January, the Broncos were paced by a career-high 36 points from Kevin Foster, the highest tally for a WCC player last season. He followed up that game by hitting eight threes last year in Spokane to finish with 29 points. Santa Clara's last win in Spokane: an 84-73 victory on Feb. 12, 2007, ending the nation's longest home winning streak at 50 games.

On a cold day in Pullman, Wash. where the temperature was 24 degrees at tip, Santa Clara fell 93-55 at Washington State on Sunday afternoon. Santa Clara is 5-3 and Washington State is 6-4. Washington State leads the all-time series 4-0. Santa Clara returns home to host Pacifca on Tues., Dec. 13 at 7 pm and then Pacific on Sat., Dec. 17 at 2 pm as part of a doubleheader with the Bronco women, who host San Jose State at 5 pm.

2011 Santa Clara Women's Soccer Season In Review
In a season in which it went to the 23rd NCAA Tournament in school history, the Santa Clara University women's soccer team (13-2-6; 6-1-1 WCC) reestablished the lofty standards set by a program that has made 10 College Cup appearances and took home a national championship in 2001. The Broncos reached as high as No. 7 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll after topping undefeated and then-No. 3 Pepperdine on Oct. 28. The Broncos won 13 games for the third consecutive season but cut their losses from seven in 2009 and 2010 to two in 2011.

Santa Clara went on a 10-0 run to close out the game in the final 2:56, including four clutch free throws by Evan Roquemore, to defeat Big East member Villanova 65-64 on Sunday in the consolation finals of the 76 Classic in Anaheim, Calif. The Broncos were led by the season-best 20 points of Raymond Cowels III, who also hit a career-high six threes in the game.
Santa Clara is 4-2 and Villanova is 4-2. Villanova entered the game averaging 80 ppg and has been to the NCAA tournament seven straight years, including the Final Four in 2009.

Tanya Schmidt will miss Senior Day tomorrow, Sat., Nov. 19, vs. rival Saint Mary’s, not due to an injury or a cold floating around campus but rather, because she will be interviewing for a Rhodes Scholarship to study at the University of Oxford. She will be one of 15 interviewing in San Francisco for two coveted spots. If selected, she will begin at Oxford next fall. Basketball Opens Season With 14 Threes in Win Over UC Merced
With three Bronco players knocking down four threes or more, Santa Clara defeated UC Merced 80-48 in its season opener in the Leavey Center on Friday night. The Broncos move to 16-1 when scoring 80+ points under Bronco head coach Kerry Keating. The 14 threes made by the Broncos were a high under Keating and the most since the Broncos made 15 vs. Gonzaga on March 5, 2001. Kevin Foster led the charge with five threes for 17 points and six assists as well. Foster led the country with 140 threes last season. Evan Roquemore and Brandon Clark chipped in four threes each.

In the first round of it's 23rd NCAA Tournament, No. 11 Santa Clara University women's soccer (13-2-6; 6-1-1 WCC) couldn't advance against California (12-7-3; 5-4-2 Pac-12) as the game ended in a 1-1 tie and Cal moved on on penalty kicks 4-3. In a game where each team controlled possession for long stretches the Broncos were unable to keep their season alive and advance to the second round.

Schmidt Named to CoSIDA All-District Academic Team; Only WCC Player to Make List Last Two Years
Senior middle blocker Tanya Schmidt, who carries a 3.971 grade point average, was named Friday to the Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team. She is the only West Coast Conference Player on the First Team and the only volleyball player from the WCC to be recognized the past two years on the All-District team. Her name will now be forwarded to the Academic All-American national committee.

Men Ranked No. 25 in National Mid-Major Poll, Foster Named to Lute Olson Preseason All-American Team
With the exhibition opener set for Fri., Nov. 4 vs. Ryerson, the Santa Clara's men's basketball team is receiving national attention this week as well. Earlier this week the Broncos were ranked No. 25 in the preseason National Mid-Major Preseason Poll. It is the first time in the 13 years of the national poll the Broncos have been ranked in the preseason after finishing the 2010-11 season ranked No. 22. Leading the nation in three-pointers and the West Coast Conference in scoring, Santa Clara junior Kevin Foster continues to collect preseason honors. On Wednesday he was named to the 2011-12 Lute Olson Preseason All-America team by CollegeInsider.com after being named to the preseason All-WCC team last week.

The Santa Clara men’s tennis program ended its Fall season after being eliminated from both the singles and doubles draws on the second day of the Gael Classic. Despite Nicolas Vinel’s upset of the No. 1 seed in the quarterfinals, Vinel eventually fell in the semifinals. The Broncos’ only doubles team fell in the quarterfinals.

Michael Wishart Breaks Santa Clara Blocks Record
Santa Clara University senior goalkeeper Michael Wishart now stands alone atop the Santa Clara all-time goalkeeper blocks list. In the Broncos' fifth and final game of the annual Rodeo Tournament on Sun., Oct. 23, a 13-4 win over Harvard, Wishart passed Peter Moore's career total of 1,063 blocks in the first half. Wishart currently sits at 1,066 with six regular season games and the WWPA Championships still to come.

Meet New Bronco Assistant Baseball Coach Mike Oseguera
When new Bronco head baseball coach Dan O'Brien came to Santa Clara from UC San Diego he didn't have to look far for one of his assistant coaches. Mike Oseguera (MO), a 2003 graduate of the University of San Diego, coached under O'Brien at UCSD for the past eight years where the Tritons compiled an overall record of 304-149 (.671) and played in eight consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association conference tournaments, collecting four wins (2005, 2009-11). Every great team must have not only great starters but a deep set of reserves as well. Whether they are thrust into a starting role due to injury or they are coming off the bench to provide fresh legs, a reserve must be ready at all times. Kristi Candau (KC) was one of the key reserves for the 2001 Santa Clara national championship team. She appeared in 23 games while only making three starts. She made the most of her opportunities by scoring eight goals and adding three assists to rank fifth on the team with 19 points. Wrapping up its nine-game homestand, No. 13 Santa Clara (8-1-4; 1-0 WCC) plays two West Coast Conference games this weekend. On Thu. Oct. 13 the Broncos will host conference-newcomer Brigham Young (7-4-2; 1-1 WCC) at 7 p.m. Santa Clara will return to the field on Sun., Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. vs. San Francisco (4-9-0; 1-1 WCC).

The Santa Clara men's and women's cross country teams competed Friday in Golden Gate Park at the Gator Invite hosted by San Francisco State. In favorable conditions, both teams had solid performances. The women placed 5th of 13 teams and the men placed 6th of 16. Host SF State won the men's title and WCC rival USF won the women's title.

The 2001 Santa Clara women's soccer team was a special group of young women. They accomplished something every team at every level wants to do: win a championship. Through hard work, determination and a lot of support from each other the Broncos hoisted the College Cup championship trophy over their heads in Dallas, Texas in 2001. In addition to the rain and wind, due to severe rain in the area over the last week, the course was extremely wet, with soft spots throughout.

10 Years Later: Remembering The 2001 Santa Clara Women's Soccer National Championship with Alyssa Sobolik
The 2001 national champion Santa Clara women's soccer roster featured five All-Americans, nine All-WCC performers and the WCC Player of the Year. One of the most important players on that team, however, was a freshman that did not receive any individual accolades. Goalkeeper Alyssa Sobolik (AS) went 14-2 in goal for the Broncos while making 32 saves and only allowing a 0.56 GAA. Of her 14 wins on the season, seven were shutouts, including a 1-0 shutout of North Carolina in the national championship game. SantaClaraBroncos.com (SCB) had a chance to talk to Sobolik about her memories of that championship season.

With depth being a point of strength coming into the season, no one put this on display as well as Molly Mettler. Santa Clara University (5-1-4) took down No. 17 Cal (9-2-0) by a final score of 3-0 on Sun., Sept. 25. The Broncos scored early on a header from Julie Johnston and never looked back. Johnston ended up with two goals on the day. Her two goal performance marked the second time Johnston had accomplished the feat on the season and the fourth time a Santa Clara player scored multiple goals in a game this season.

A Chat With New Assistant Baseball Coach Eddie Smith
Eddie Smith (ES) has a chair from the 2011 College World Series sitting in his office which he got as a coach on the University of Virginia team that made it to Omaha. He was also a coach on the Cavaliers team that went to the 2009 College World Series. This is the kind of success he hopes to help the Broncos achieve as part of new head coach Dan O'Brien's coaching staff. As a player Smith was part of Notre Dame winning back-to-back Big East championships and two NCAA regional appearances. Bronco Basketball Assistant Coaches Work As Head Coach For A Day On Foreign Tour
During Santa Clara's foreign tour to Canada, Bronco head coach Kerry Keating decided to take a seat further down the bench and allow for each of his three assistants to take a turn as the head coach for the final three games in Canada. The coaches order was determined by the way their own teams finished on Thursday morning during the "Amazing Race: Bronco Style", a scavenger hunt through the streets of Vancouver where each assistant picked their team through a lottery. In its first match of the La Quinta Inn & Suites Invitational at Utah Valley State, Santa Clara defeated rival Cal Poly 3-1. Santa Clara is now 4-1 this season and Cal Poly falls to 3-2, with a win at WCC rival Saint Mary’s Tuesday. Set scores were 25-22, 25-23, 20-25 and 25-22.

Volleyball Heads to Utah for La Quinta Inn & Suites Invitational at Utah Valley State
With the current WCC Player of Week in Dana Knudsen, The Santa Clara volleyball team enters the second week of its season, continuing play non-conference tournaments. The Broncos (2-1) travel to Utah to play in the La Quinta Inn & Suites Invitational at Utah Valley State. The Broncos open up the tournament against Cal Poly on Fri., Sept. 3 at 4:30 p.m. Santa Clara will continue the tournament on Sat., Sept. 4 with matches vs. Michigan (3-0) and Utah Valley State (2-1). They will play Michigan at 10 am and then host-Utah Valley State at 7 pm. Michigan is No. 24 in the latest AVCA national poll and Cal Poly received votes this week.

Knudsen Collects WCC Player Of the Week For Third Time in Her Career
Hitting .545 this past weekend, Bronco junior Dana Knudsen was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week in the first week of play. Knudsen, who was selected over seven other WCC players, led Santa Clara to a 2-1 record and was named to the All-Tournament team at the Seattle University Fall Volley. Tanya Schmidt was also named to the All-Tournament team. It is the third straight year Knudsen has received WCC Player of the Week honors early in the season.

Playing its third match in 24 hours to start the season, Santa Clara defeated Eastern Washington 3-0 Saturday. The Broncos won 25-19, 25-19 and 25-18. Earlier in the day Eastern Washington defeated Washington State in five sets. Santa Clara finishes the tournament at 2-1 and heads to Utah Valley State next weekend for three matches.

On the eve of Santa Clara’s first 2011 volleyball match in Seattle, senior Tanya Schmidt was named as a candidate for the 2011 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. Schmidt, one of just two from the WCC on the list, is a returning All-WCC First Team Middle Blocker for the Broncos who also excels in the classroom, sporting a 3.97 GPA as she enters her final season - one of the highest GPAs among the candidates.
