John Schuster joined the Santa Clara athletic department in August 2005 as the Manager of Marketing and Promotions. In his current role, Schuster oversees all the marketing, game day promotions, in-stadium merchandising, student marketing staff and advertising for the University's six revenue varsity sports, while also assisting with ticket sales and sponsorships. He manages the Cheer and Dance teams, Pep Band, Ruff Riders & Bronco Kidz Club as well.
Prior to joining Santa Clara, Schuster spent five years at Stanford University working in a number of capacities including football marketing, youth promotions & women's sports initiatives. His duties included marketing and operations for Stanford's soccer and baseball programs and he also assisted the athletic department with its overall marketing goals. Schuster was responsible for the marketing, ticket sales and game day operations and promotions for the Cardinal's highly ranked baseball team.
A former professional soccer player with the San Jose Earthquakes of the Western Soccer Alliance, Schuster has an excellent soccer business background also. From 1998 - 2000, he spent time in the U.S. Soccer Federation's communications department, while also serving as a national team coordinator for youth and senior teams.
He was a member of the staff during the U.S. women's soccer team's dramatic run to the 1999 Women's World Cup Championship, capped off by Brandi Chastain's penalty kick in the final.
After earning his bachelor's degree at Cal, Schuster also received a Marketing MBA -sports-specialty-- from the University of Oregon in 1999. Following his graduation from Cal, he moved on to Soccer World, where he spent 11 years, including time working on the 1994 World Cup at Stanford Stadium and MLS Inauguration & Launch in 1996.
