Student-Athletes Set New Cumulative GPA High

July 2, 2008

The Santa Clara University athletic department proudly announced today that Bronco student-athletes have raised their cumulative grade point average to 3.025 following grade reporting from the spring quarter for the student-athletes from all 19 intercollegiate sports. In the spring term alone, SCU student-athletes compiled a 3.08 GPA, which matches the previous single term high from Spring 2005.

"Four years ago we made elevating the cumulative GPA one of our top priorities so these numbers are gratifying to see," said Santa Clara Athletics Director Dan Coonan. "I congratulate our athletes for their continuing success in the classroom, and I thank our Academic Support unit, Zoe Segnitz and Jason Stock, for all of their efforts in bringing this about."

Leading the way for Santa Clara in the spring quarter is the women's golf team, which posted a team GPA of 3.7.

Through the 2007-08 academic year, Santa Clara had 15 student-athletes earn WCC All-Academic honors. The women's golf team recently had five golfers named to the National Golf Coaches Association All-Scholar-Athlete team. In addition, 12 men's water polo players received WWPA All-Academic honors. Mitch Henke and Elizabeth Doran of Bronco basketball received ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VIII honors as well as Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association Scholar-Athlete accolades, and Matt Hatzke of the men's soccer team earned ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America honors.
